VHS : Sleeping Beauty (Disney)
For some reason, and I can't quite put my finger on it, but I'm really not into Sleeping Beauty. I adore Disney movies and have seen pretty much every one, with the exception of a couple. This does not rank high on my list. The story never really interested me, the music was just OK. It came as a bit old fashioned for me.
That said, It's certainly not a bad movie by any means, just not as enjoyable as some of the other brilliant ones out there.

By the time Jack Nicholson shows up for about five minutes of screen time as Garrett Breedlove, this turgid 1996 sequel to 1983's Terms of Endearment has already slogged through two deaths, a psychotherapist with an Oedipal complex, and a lot of scrapbooks. The problems with this shamelessly manipulative movie are many, and they all begin with the inevitable premise that tough Texas matron Aurora Greenway can carry on without being challenged by her feisty daughter Emma. However, without Debra Winger's earthy grit counterbalancing Shirley MacLaine's flamboyant disapproval, the story seems to work in a vacuum. Much of the appeal and resonance of the first film came from how these characters dealt with life's unpredictable course and how James L. Brooks captured their idiosyncrasies with a refreshing ... This musical "The Music Man" Starring Robert Preston, Shirley Jones, Ron Howard & others has always been one of my all time favorite musical's. I have this VHS film of this movie, which i have had for a long time. It's a Great Musical, but do yourself a favor & buy it now on DVD & make sure you get the one on Widescreen. In my opinion, it makes all the difference in the world as far as Quality goes to be able to have it on Widescreen period. This is definitely true for the Classic Epic Film's.

If you feel silly watching Shirley Temple films without a child, watch this one. Jack Haley and the wonderful and sexy Alice Faye are superb. There's a dark aspect with one character stalking Shirley (rather unsettling). Everyone is terrific in the film and I believe it to be Shirley Temple's best movie. I agree with one reviewer about the cruel dispatching of the nurse Collins. It was either the result of clumsy writing or editing. Otherwise this is one enjoyable, bouncy film.

This one is full of the famous Shirley Temple charm, and Bill Robinson's unequaled tap routines, against the backdrop of the South at the outbreakof the Civil War. The part played by Mr. Robinson is played with dignity. The story line is well written and the supporting cast is excellent. This one and Heidi are my personal favorites.

VHS : Certain Fury
This film directed by Stephen Gyllenhaal is only interesting in that it presents two female protagonists, pre-empting his later preference for female actors, eg Barbara Hershey. There is enough rough housing - beatings, rape, fire, flood, rats, drugs, chase, guns - for action fans and the dramatic plot doesn't slow things down too much. However given that the main characters are female, screenwriter Michael Jacobs unfortunately subjects them both to extended humiliations.
The incident which sets Irene Cara and Tatum O'Neal on the lam is poorly if campily staged, a courtroom gunbattle where the police are exposed as clods, and the idea that they have no reason to run since they are not responsible for the gunfire is soon dubiously rationalised by the death of a pursuing policeman.
Jacobs idea of social commentary ... Read More

Besides "Gone With the Wind", this movie is my favorite of all-time. What a cast! Dolly Parton, Sally Field, and Julia Roberts are outstanding in their acting abilities. Dolly Parton brings so much warmth to her role, I truly felt like she was my Southern mother. I loved seeing the Southern culture and all of its traditions (the armadillo groom's cake was hilarious) depicted in such splendor. I also liked the emphasis on friendship and how very important friendship is to surviving with the harshest trials of life. The importance of friendship is essentially the underlying theme of the movie. Just as "Gone With the Wind" shows how Scarlett O'Hara could survive any obstacle that comes her way, this movie shows how to handle the hardest life situation...death. Although the mood of the movie becomes somber, the ending really ... Read More
