VHS : Carny
Gary Busey and Robbie Robertson hit the nail square on the head in their performance of Carny. Toss in Jodie Foster and you have a real tilt-a-whirl of a ride through the scenes in this movie. I rated it 4 stars and would give it 5 if it was on DVD. I worked several years in a stick joint pulling in quarters with one of the smaller shows. There is a lot of facts based on the carnival life and I was glad to have played a part. You don't see much of the mobster type which was big business several years ago. What you do get is a peek into a life that everyone would like a taste of. This movie is very real for the times it was defining. I've met the real person that the Bozo who Gary played after and he was a total riot. Gary Busey plays him to perfection. You always have to have a straight man ... Read More

VHS : The Straight Story
So many people are surprised my this movie. The fact that David Lynch could make a simple, straightforward, sweet story has left many surprised and dumbfounded. Have all of you forgotten about ELEPHANT MAN??? He portrayed John Merrick with a sweet and sensitive disposition. In the end David served up one of the most sad but poignant endings more so than the straight story. I'm only surprised that he never made more of this style. He is equally adept at this style as he is to his bizarre plot provoking mind twisted movies.

If you have the slightest hint of impatience then this movie then this is not for you. If not then you in for a gem. Richard Farnsworth performance as Alvin Straight is nothing short of brilliant. It's a sad shame too many people missed it.

VHS : Spider-Man 2
Okay. SPIDER-MAN was a smash in the Summer of 2002, so naturally Columbia Pictures and Marvel wanted a sequel. How could they possibly top themselves?

Doc Ock.

Awright! Yes, I was excited. When I saw the promo art for Alfred Molina as Otto Octavius I was very, very impressed. If they did this right. . .

SPIDER-MAN 2 is the very best Superhero film ever made, in my humble opinion. It is a beautiful balance of character, action, emotion, excitement and art. It is not merely a Summer Blockbuster: it is a well-rounded film that has become a classic.

The team from the first film returned for 2, and their camaraderie is evident in every frame of the movie. Actors Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst, James Franco, Rosemary Harris and J. K. Simmons inhabit their ... Read More

VHS : Spider-Man (2002)
Spider-man is a hugely popular film franchise, and it's not without good reason. The first film is great with good acting, great special effects and music, and a great starting point for the story. It involves Peter Parker getting bitten by some kind of genetically enhanced spider, giving him the famous powers Spider-man is known for. After that you get the green goblin involved (a guy who does a science experiment on himself... but it doesn't go so well) and you have some good fight scenes and some cheesy but funny lines. There are a few particularly memorable scenes, the cage fight near the film's beginning being one of them. So overall I highly recommend Spider-man to anyone who likes action movies and now that it's offered for such cheap prices you barely have any excuse to not see it!

Oh how I wish this was available on DVD and - even better - remastered.

I was looking for a DVD version because my VHS copy is tired. I bought it used many years ago and I rarely play it because I'm afraid it will go the way of all my other VHS tapes - munched by the player, or just worn out.

I've nothing to add to the other reviews, really. My only previous exposure to the Threepenny Opera had been through performances of the music completely out of context and I was thrilled when I recognized the songs in the movie. But if you get a chance to view this, please do.

It really is marvelously entertaining.

VHS : The Story of Robin Hood
Honestly, I can never have too much Robin Hood. I love each and every take out there, and that includes "The Story of Robin Hood", a little-known live action Disney version from the 1950's. I love the gorgeous Technicolor, the delicate matte painting backgrounds, the folk ballads, the archery, the Richard Todd. More on him in a minute.

It's hard to imagine a more sedate version of the rollicking legend. Not that the film is boring; it isn't. It's just oddly calm. There's action, but no peril, plot, but no ideas. The film is a straightforward telling of the facts, so to speak, but we are never allowed any thrills or chills and there is never any doubt that it'll all turn out right in the end.

The cast is decent, minus any real standouts. Joan Rice is a pretty, tom-boyish Maid Marion, and Patrick Barr a suitably awe-inspiring ... Read More
