VHS : Tea for Two
Charleston! Charleston! A group of kids have discovered their parents' childhood belongings including clothes and records. Their great uncle (S. Z. Sakall) is aghast that they would mock the 1920s and does his best to portray the era in a more favorable light.

Nanette Carter (Doris Day) is a dancer who yearns to be on the stage, but everyone recommends more training. She dutifully complies. That is, until she is offered the lead role in a show if she can sponsor it as well. She agrees, but her rich uncle is reluctant to give her the money because the stock market has just crashed. They make a bet; if she can say "No" to every question asked of her for two whole days, she can have the money for the show. It isn't an easy undertaking, especially since she is in love (Gordon MacRae). ... Read More

VHS : Bundle of Joy
I had never even heard of this movie until I saw it on TCM about a year ago. It is a cute story about a young salesgirl Polly (Debbie Reynolds) who ends up getting fired from her job. On the way back to her house she sees a young baby on the orphanage steps and saves it from a terrible fall. When she takes the baby into the orphanage they think it is her baby that she is giving them. The employees think that because she was fired she can't provide for "her" baby so they convince her boss to give her the job back. She ends up realizing later in the movie how much she loves the baby and wants to keep it. She meets the man of her dreams (ironically her real husband, Eddie Fisher) and adopts the baby.

When are they going to put this movie on DVD?

VHS : Lucky Me
My wife and I are fans of Doris Day's and usually find that most of her movies are quality affairs. However, we found this movie to be a complete misfire and unworthy of Doris' talents. It seemed like a rush job in order to get the first cinemascope movie into release. The songwriting team that contributed a fine score for Calamity Jane for Doris came up empty in the inspiration department when they penned the tunes for Lucky Me.

The movie plays more like a circa early 1940's musical than a mid 1950's one, and is not nearly as sophisticated as other musicals of the period. All but a few jokes fall flat. The movie starts out quite well with a particularly cute, well-dressed and perky Doris singing the "Superstition Song" as she bops down the sidewalk of a beautiful city street in beautiful color while trying to ... 8.To Each His Own starring: Olivia de Havilland, John Lund, Mary Anderson, Roland Culver, Phillip Terry
directed by: Mitchell Leisen
February 17, 1998

VHS : To Each His Own
After winning a long court battle with Warner Bros. that kept her off the screen for three years, OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND became a free-lancer and got her big chance when Paramount offered her TO EACH HIS OWN. Everyone shines in this movie, from the leads (OLIVIA DE HAVILLAND and JOHN LUND) to the smallest bit players. The script had been turned down by Ingrid Bergman and Ginger Rogers.

De Havilland was perfect as Jody Norris, realistically portraying a young girl of seventeen and then various stages of maturity, ending as a brusque, middle-aged business woman in war-torn London of 1944. Her range as an actress is fully demonstrated and she does a remarkable job of playing the heroine at three levels of development over the years.

John Lund is excellent too in a dual role (her lover and later her grown son), ... Read More

9.Burns and Allen Christmas - Company for Christmas / Christmas in Jail starring: George Burns, Gracie Allen, Bea Benaderet, Harry von Zell, Fred Clark

VHS : Burns and Allen Christmas - Company for Christmas / Christmas in Jail
George and Gracie are in good form in these two clever, Christmas-themed episodes. Fun for old-movie fans, too, with guest appearances by familiar character actors Douglass Dumbrille and George E. Stone. The video producers have noticeably re-edited the shows, adding quick fades to bridge the gaps. But the frequent fades are only a minor drawback, because the quality is superior. These prints have never looked better.

10.It's a Great Feeling starring: Irving Bacon, Claire Carleton, Jack Carson, Sue Casey, Joan Crawford
September 01, 1998
Average Rating: out of 5 stars

VHS : It's a Great Feeling
Joan Crawford has a very rare cameo (perhaps the only cameo of her professional career, besides "Hollywood Canteen") in this late 40's Warners picture. It's somewhat of a spoof of the grand Hollywood-like movies of the Golden Era. Joan mocks herself in a comical way in her brief scene. She came across as very funny and believable because she was really just being herself in this movie. If you're a Joan Crawford fan or a fan of 40's cinema then I certainly recommend this Technicolor classic.
