VHS : The Jericho Mile
Peter Strauss for a very short time after Rich Man, Poor Man was one of the coolest and most sought after actors of the time, especially for TV movies. If you don't remember the Movie of the Week the you never heard of this great flick, and Peter Strauss was awesome as a convict doing hard time that found his escape on the track.

I haven't seen this movie since it first aired, but I remember it as one of the better TV movies of all time. Great story, great performances. Just give us the damn DVD already! 5 Cleats

VHS : Clara's Heart
This film is more than it wants to be. The critic and cynic in me would gleefully join Mr. Marshall Fine in enumerating the many ways this film tries to manipulate its audience. First on my list would be the score by Dave Grusin which acts as a musical leash to pull the audience where they probably would have gone anyway. But that is where I will stop, because although the film does everything in its power to convince us it's the cinematic equivalent of Prozac, it betrays this image by containing subtle, powerful insights that set it apart from its saccharine ilk. There IS something different here, you just have to know where to look. Its not so much about what Clara does for David, a lot of his problems remain after her departure... What is special about "Clara's Heart" is that its about the ... Read More

The Good Things
*A lot of good special effects and action scenes (albiet the quality is noticably different).
*Filming style is good.
*Characters are good and deep. Good acting, once agian.
*Writing is not bad. Some good comedy, some good drama.
*Good music.

The Bad Things
*Pretty iffy storyline. I liked the idea and the fact that it is so grand. But most people seem to have a problem with it and other aspects (such as Spock having a half-brother who is so compassionate).

The Questionable Things
*It looks as though they tried to make it grittier, edgier, and more sleazy. It kind of works, but in a way, it may be too different.
*Despite the quality of the effects, some of them are totally weird at the end.

VHS : The Lost Man
This is a good movie about explosive late 60s race relations. But the soundtrack is not listed on Amazon. So I will use the movie entry to review the soundtack.

Quincy Jones, one of the absolute best film composers of this time, wrote the Lost Man Soundtrack, and it is excellent. It holds a lot of soul and blues by unknown singers, and lots of electrified flutes and heavy fuzz bass. It is typlically outstanding work by Jones, who understood jazz and blues better than any composer of the period. He also understood how to exploit tone color to get the maximum tension from the film.

The music, however, holds up beautifully on its own, and I would encourage
anyone to seek out this soundtrack on vynal, until someone has the good sense to reissue The Lost Man score.

This movie is full of inspiration! I really liked the no nonsense, "take no prisoners" approach Joe Clark had to getting his school back into shape. What makes THIS movie superior to "Stand and Deliver" is that there's actually drama in this one. It shows just how tough inner city schools can be.

In these types of schools, the biggest problem is generally NOT whether or not they can pass a Calculus test... it's whether they can survive long enough to make it to the end of the school day!

In "Stand and Deliver" I kept waiting for some big event to take place (other than the passing of the test they took), but it never happened. "Lean on Me" was FULL of such scenes! Nonstop action!! Some scenes ARE violent, though, so be careful if there are kids in the room!

When I first saw this movie years ago, I did not like it. Since then I saw it again and absolutely fell in love with Sidney. What happened to these type of actors today? Hardly any of them them except Paul Newman, and several others, have that type of quality that Sidney has. Maybe it is called 'paying their dues or practicing their craft'. Not sure what it is but this movie, was great.
