VHS : I Don't Want to Talk About It (VHS)
This is a delightful film by Argentine director Maria Luisa Bemberg (who directed her first film at age 56! - an inspiration to us all). The movie takes place in a small Argentine town by the name of San Jose de los Altares, some time in the 1930s. Like most small towns, it is a place filled with hypocrisy and gossip. When the movie opens, the camera catches the town priest without his pants (literally) in bed with his mistress, and we soon discover that the brothel is the place to go if you're looking for the mayor or other important town figures. Despite their peccadilloes, the town folk strive to keep up appearances. It is in this environment that Leonor attempts to "hide" the undeniable reality that her daughter is a dwarf. Leonor insists that it never be mentioned and attempts to ... Read More

VHS : Secrets of the Andes
This movie is a fantasy about a supposed ancient relec that enables one to see into the future. I think it is a good example of how the Church's priest tried to maintain his faith while at the same time understanding the "primitive" superstitions of many of the local people in Bolivia/Peru. Diana learns some of the local folklore and finds the artifact and uses it to help her dad save his expedition from being shut down for lack of funding. One would probably have to watch the movie several times to understand all the spiritual implications. It is a kid's movie, so the story isn't that great, but it gives parents a good opportunity to discuss spiritual matters with their children.

EL MAR DE LUCAS (Lucas' Sea) is a beautifully constructed Argentinean film conceived, written, directed and starring Victor Laplace. The story deals with issues that are the results of the influences of families broken by divorce. In keeping the story simple and honest, the concept of men accepting their responsibility and vulnerability after leaving a young family to 'see the world' is, in Laplace's hands, a very moving and powerful statement without even coming close to banal!

As the story opens in Buenos Aires, Juan (Laplace) is celebrating his 50th birthday by graciously cooking individual personal favorite dishes for his fiends, the patrons of his restaurant. It seems there is nothing this generous man will not do for his confreres. A young woman (Manuela - in a role that indicates the star ... Read More
