Once again, Jimmy Cagney struts his stuff.....and makes a big name for himself in the very early part of his acting career. He clearly demonstrates that he is a man who take over any scene and dominate it, and the film.

The story is a fast-mover and the movie is over in less than an hour-and-a-half. The cinematography in here is excellent and DVD really brings that out. For me, a highlight of the show was simply the facial expressions on Cagney. At the end of the movie, as he stands in the pouring rain getting ready to go in and kill people, his expression is downright scary - a very powerful scene.

The ending of this movie is memorable, too. In all the film may be dated but it still very, very watchable and one of the great crime movies of all time.

VHS : Little Princess
Long before the 1995 remake supplanted the legendary Shirley Temple in the minds of young audiences; The Little Princess was a 1939 story set in Victorian England and starring the Academy Award winning actress. As a timeless story (now eighty years old) of perseverance in the face of adversity, the Little Princess evokes a full range of emotions rarely seen in modern cinema. You'll tear up as a young Shirley is forced from her home, but you'll laugh and smile during the film's dancing (Shirley is quite an accomplished tap dancer) and singing routines.

Film historians may delight to note that this was (to the best of my knowledge) the first Technicolor film that Temple starred in, and it noticeably shows, particularly when compared to some of Shirley's earlier works that have been newly colorized ... Read More

I remember watching this film when i was 9 or 10 back in the late 50's or early 60's after mt father went to work and my mom was asleep. There have been three or four spin offs to this great film that don't even come close.I don't no for sure but it seems that they left something out of this makeover. It doesn't matter this is a five star movie, that i rated four because i was stupid and hit the four star and it won't let me change me it.

VHS : Night Must Fall (1937)
I was not a big Robert Montgomery fan in spite of my love for old movies - UNTIL I saw this film on Turner Classic Movies about 3 years ago. After seeing him in tux and tails being an idle rich socialite in a dozen movies, Mr. Montgomery really showed his range of talent here. He was rewarded with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor for this role. With his charisma and bad-boy good looks, he makes Ted Bundy look like Winnie The Pooh! His hip-hop swagger and confidence made it irresistible for Rosalind Russell to want a bit of "thug love" in her previously uneventful existence. Montgomery's "Danny" showed up that you can never let your guard down because even the nicest next door neighbor can be a homicidal maniac. Dame May Whitty got caught up because she was a despicable old lady who thought she was pimping everyone ... Read More

VHS : Smilin Through (1932)
this is one of my very favorite movies! The whole cast is wonderful! Since everyone has already raved about Norma and Frederick's performances, I'm going to rave about Leslie's. There is a scene, in the flashback, where we see the night before the fatal wedding. John and Moonyean sneak away and have a lighthearted, romantic conversation. The dialogue may sound corny coming out of someone else's mouths ( "wouldnt it be wonderful if every time I opened my eyes, you were there?" or "after tonight, there'll be no more partings, no more goodbyes, will there my sweet?") but coming from Leslie Howard and Norma Shearer's mouths, we dont cringe. In fact, we all sincerely go "AW!" he is so adorable in that scene, that when Moonyean is shot, and he is holding her and we see the depths of despair and anguish in his eyes, our heart breaks for him! ... VHS : The Miracle Woman (Restored)
That's Barbara Stanwyck, very young & desirable in this 1931 forgotten little movie that I understand costs quite bit for its day. She's the daughter of a preacher who has just been fired & immediately dies. She gives the hypocrites in the congregation a firery sermon in his place. She leaves town, vowing vengence with a shady manager in tow. Soon she is famous & wealthy as Florence "Faith" Fallon an evagelist & healer. She has become what she had cursed the congregation for. She's knows she's a phony. But then she has a success of sorts. A young avaitor, (David Manners) blinded by the war, is despondent & on the verge of suicide. He hears her broadcast & doesn't follow through. He seeks her out & they develop a friendship. In a series of meetings, mostly in his apartment, they fall in love. Now more that ever she ... 8.Supernatural starring: Carole Lombard, Randolph Scott, Alan Dinehart, Vivienne Osborne, H.B. Warner

VHS : Supernatural
All about séances and spirit revenge, and not nearly as bad as it could've been. Spititualist Alan Dinehart will do anything to get his hands on Carole Lombard's money, including murder. Vivienne Osborne plays a woman about to be executed (she's called the "Greenwich Village murderess"), and she allows H.B. Warner, a doctor who believes a dead criminal's spirit can enter another's body and continue its criminal ways, to experiment on her after her execution. Osborne's spirit enters Lombard's body, and having taken over Osborne's personality, Lombard is able to expose and get revenge on the murdering and scheming Dinehart. Some of the special effects are pretty crude (it's 1933, don't forget) and the spiritualism stuff is fairly hokey, but Carole Lombard is exciting to watch as she changes from a decent woman into a vicious criminal once Osborne's spirit ... 9.Inspiration starring: Greta Garbo, Robert Montgomery, Lewis Stone, Marjorie Rambeau, Judith Vosselli

VHS : Inspiration
Of all of Garbo's movies I've seen to date, this film may be the one with the "weakest" plot, but her presence & allure are worth the watch. For example, although "Anna Christie" (another early '30s) was a more "static" early talkie, nevertheless, I think "Anna..." is a better film (especially the german version).

Notwithstanding, she makes a good couple with a young Robert Montgomery-you believe they're in love- and she gets to wear some very beautiful Adrian designed outfits as Yvonne "The Toast of Paris". Good acting by Lewis Stone, Karen Morley and Marjorie Rambeau.

If you are a Garbo fan you have to give it a try, but if aren't and you want to watch her at her very best, watch "Camille", "Queen Christina", "Grand Hotel", "Anna Karenina", "Ninotchka"... even "Mata Hari", an early thirties' in which the romantic plot works ... Read More
