By the time Jack Nicholson shows up for about five minutes of screen time as Garrett Breedlove, this turgid 1996 sequel to 1983's Terms of Endearment has already slogged through two deaths, a psychotherapist with an Oedipal complex, and a lot of scrapbooks. The problems with this shamelessly manipulative movie are many, and they all begin with the inevitable premise that tough Texas matron Aurora Greenway can carry on without being challenged by her feisty daughter Emma. However, without Debra Winger's earthy grit counterbalancing Shirley MacLaine's flamboyant disapproval, the story seems to work in a vacuum. Much of the appeal and resonance of the first film came from how these characters dealt with life's unpredictable course and how James L. Brooks captured their idiosyncrasies with a refreshing ... Haven't we all wished that we could go back and make it all better? H.D., a not so great bull rider is hurting, physically and emotionally. He goes home to heal his busted ribs and learns that his sister has put his father (H.D.'s hero) in a home for old folks. H.D. can't abide it. He needs money to save the family homestead and all he knows is bull riding. The icing on the cake is that his beautiful highschool sweetheart is now a widow. The rodeo is coming to a town not too far from home. Can H.D. draw and ride the bull that's never been rode? Does he have one good 8 second ride left in him? Can he stop rodeoing from town to town? The top prize is $100,000! Enough to save the homestead and start a new life!
This is just a great movie for anyone that still dreams.

VHS : Town That Dreaded Sundown
The year is 1946 and while some last minute soldiers are still making their way home, most of them are already back from the war and are starting up families, going to work or school, or just enjoying their time at home. Little did they know that on this day, Sunday, March 3rd, that a hooded killer would begin his onslaught right here in Texarkana, Arkansas. They call him The Phantom Killer and his legacy begins here and now.

This film is in some desperate need of restoration and an official DVD release, for that matter. The dated film reel is too dark during most of the scenes I wanted to see most, which is just about every scene with The Phantom Killer since most of his kills take place at night. I feel it hurts the film more than anything. If it was just grainy throughout the film, ... Read More

As a rule I'm not a western fan, but this movie has it all- comedy, romance, adventure, drama. If you're looking for an all around fun movie, try this one. John Wayne plays a very different role than usual, and gives the romantic lead to handsome John Agar and Harry Carey, Jr. It has poignant moments, great comedy lines, and an occassional moment when your eyes are moist. (On a side note, I love some of the character's names- Flint Cohill, Tyree, Brome Clay, to name a few.)

I really enjoyed this movie cause it did show the Indian grayeagle a kind person. I loved it when each day she beth learned about who she is and not what she was lead to believe. I loved it cause it was a clean movie withno language what so ever. I wish they had more scences for each time they moved from one place and at the end a little longer with chief running wolf her father that she found out about. I hope for more movies like this one especially about the Indians

I saw this movie in a theater during my early teens. It is one of the most entertaining movies I saw at that time and so I thought that I would see it again. Unfortunately, due to heavy load of school work, I totally forgot about seeing it again. But, after all these years, I still haven't forgotten the title of the movie. Seldom do a movie make an impact that I remember anything about it. I especially remember the soundtrack of Let's Get Harry. Although I can't sing the lyrics, I can hum the melody. How's that? So now I am now hoping for the DVD version to buy.

I love the film but... We get a two sides dvd, labeled "standard" and "widescreen". Standard has 640x480 pixels video, 4:3 aspect ratio, and widescreen 853x480 pixels, 16:9 aspect ratio. This is great, but the problem is both versions are truncated versions of the original. The widescreen is even more truncated ! If you compare two images, Clint has some blue sky above is hat in standard, and you see only half of his hat in widescreen ! I say it this way to makes things clear, but I'm a tech oriented guy, I checked twice what really was on this dvd before writing this review.
The 16:9 version is cropped from the 4:3 ! This means both versions are missing the sides of the original wide image, but you see more of the original on the 4:3 ! It's a pity to see such classics so poorly transfered to DVD. We need ... Read More

Alan Ladd starred in one of the most spare and beautiful westerns ever captured on film in George Stevens' portrait of a lonely gunfighter and the bond he forms with a family of homesteaders under seige out west. Jack Schaefer's very good western novella was lofted to greatness by Ladd's quiet performance as the gunfighter Shane, who gets a glimpse of the life he would have preferred rather than the hand he was dealt.

A story and film which sounds simple, and is often described as such, is really anything but, its complexity hidden by its scope and the subtle manner in which it is told. Shane is the mythic figure, riding in on the horizon and staying to help a family fend off a rancher trying to drive the farmers off their land. It is a story of changing times and complex relationships.
