Although this is Ashby's first directorial effort, you can already see many of the themes and recurrent fascinations of the man in this early work. The spare framing, the comfortableness with silences that would later emerge so brilliantly and patiently in Being There, and of course the offbeat and quirky performances, bringing to life characters that are wholly formed yet wildly funny and almost never otherwise shown on screen.

I also found the "European" edits (i.e., abrupt and sometimes surreal) to be creative, and of course the performances by many great character actors were superb. In particular Lee Grant stands out, who was nominated for an Oscar for this performance. Her drunk scene at the tenement is a hoot. Also look for a very young, very clueless Robert Klein.

I give this uber low-budget Vietnam movie a salute for showing the Enemy side of the conflict through an objective lens. I've watched alot of Vietnam movies, most of which suffer from low-budget historical inaccuracies in weapons, uniforms, vehicles: mainly because its no longer possible to acquire all US-Vietnam era gear from renting third world armories, like in the Philipines. This movie has those flaws but most war movies w/out big budgets from the 80's did, so bear that in mind.

The intro shows the main character, Han, a Viet Cong, snipe down to 2 Americans in the triple canopy forest: they all look like just kids...Beau Bridges plays an American officer who eventually falls into the hands of the Viet Cong. Han is forced to take him on a forced march back to his communist superiors; ... Read More

If you read Steinbeck's novel of the same title already, either lower your expectations for the film, don't watch it, or watch it as if it's a different story.

Shepperd Strudwick does a fine job acting as the petty, mean-spirited, controlling Fred Tiflin. Decent performances were also delivered by Myrna Loy as Alice, Peter Miles as the boy Tom, Robert Mitchum as cowboy Billy Buck and Louis Calhern as Grandfather. Robert Mitchum as Billy Buck seemed an odd choice as the novel made one expect an older, heavier man. Poor acting didn't kill this film, the rewriting did. Instead of making the audience cope with Billy Buck bludgeoning to death the pregnant mare to save her colt, the writers decided to have all the fuss about how to safely deliver the breech position colt resolved with an easy delivery. Problem ... Read More

As if this makes me some sort of expert or celebrity, but, whoo-hoo, I come from the "real" town/parish where the events that inspired the play and later the movie actually took place. Filming "on location" in our town/parish was denied, of course. Still as the filming went forward (in another location as we know)and after the film's release the people of our parish were outraged that such sins would be exposed. The publication of the play drew similar, but easily as passionate a reaction. For such a long time the roots in our community ran deep and strong. The people worked hard and were pious. Loyalty and discretion were expected. They wrapped themselve in renunciation not only of their sins but of the world at large. The story as it unfolded in real life brought disgrace to a community, a church and a people who ... Read More

I just happened to find this movie several years ago on one of the premium channels. I had never heard of it but from the info given it sounded interesting. I watch this movie and laughed & laughed. It has a great cast of actors. And each character is essential to the movie. It's a movie that isn't a block buster but it is a movie that is very entertaining & one that you can watch over & over. It's about a crazy southern family, with quirky habits, lots of sibling rivalry, family love, and a family bond that eventually allows them to over come their obstacles & their feuds with one another & being a southerner I can relate. I have a list of movies that I have seen and enjoyed but they are rarely ever shown on TV again. So I went on-line & found it. If you want a laugh and to be highly entertained this ... Read More
