VHS : The Rounders
This amiable modern Western benefits enormously from the casting of the great genre veterans Henry Fonda and Glenn Ford as two veteran cowboys ,forever on the verge of abandoning their nomadic lifestyle and settling down ,but never quite making it.The movie revolves around their attempts to tame an especially recalitrant bronco named Ol Fooler-who it is suggested is a little like the two men in being stubborn ,hard to tame and determined to go his own way but likeable and who eventually will be coerced back into the mainstream

There is not a tightly constructed plot as such ,more a series of incidents heavy on the humour which -be aware ,is often slightly risque (there is a shot of bare bottoms for example which may bother the more prudish ).

Ford and Fonda are wonderful ... Read More

VHS : The Maltese Falcon
"The Maltese Falcon" is a great movie because of its great actors and tight dialogue. Bogart, as the cynical but ultimately ultramoral, Sam Spade, is great as are his antitheses, Peter Lorre, Sidney Greenstreet and Mary Astor. Spade is suckered by a beautiful woman [Astor] into what turns out to be the criminal enterprise of locating the 'Maltese Falcon', a ceramic bird worth millions. Men and women fight and die to gain its possession.

The plot is convoluted but convincing and, finally, after the murder of several illicit wealth-seekers, the Falcon is located it and is found to be a phony. The cops lead the beautiful Astor who, while still proclaiming her 'love' for Bogart, off to her well-deserved punishment. Bogart, as Spade, has the opportunity to set her free but...does the 'right' ... Read More

VHS : The Glenn Miller Story
If you love Jimmy Stewart, this is the movie for you. Jimmy Stewart portrayed Glenn Miller with style and grace. Love it!

The scenes with the service men is very special to my family as my father was in this film and can be clearly seen. When this movie was on TV when I was growing up, we always watched it no matter the time of day. Now we can watch it over and over and pause it to get a better look.

VHS : Treasure of Sierra Madre (B&W)
Serpentine story of how three gold-diggers are perverted by their success. Well-acted and strikingly directed. Has interesting parallels to Peckinpah's "The Wild Bunch" in its contrasting portrayal of Mexicans.

VHS : All Through the Night
Nazi fifth columnists, led by sinister, sadistic Peter Lorre as Pepi, are infiltrating a city, and big-time gambler Humphrey Bogart is there to weed them out. When a popular baker is found murdered, Bogart investigates. He's led to a warehouse and discovers a room filled with Nazi paraphernalia and a book that explains what happened to the baker (he also gets a lot of help from Kaaren Verne, who has been forced to play along with the Nazis). In a fiery climax, while a motorboat packed with explosives is being directed toward a battleship to blow it up, Bogart takes control, sees Lorre get killed, and then steers the boat away from the ship before diving overboard to safety. He gets a hero's welcome, of course, and Verne. Lorre is excellent as the evil Pepi, killing at will and at another point smashing the fingers of a guy after losing ... Read More

VHS : Geisha Boy
In THE GEISHA BOY, Jerry Lewis provides a performance with equal shades of subtlety and comic brilliance. The colourful backdrop of Japan is a treat to see, and the supporting cast is equally fine.

Small-time magician Gilbert "The Great" Wooley (Jerry Lewis) and his rabbit Harry are part of a USO tour of Japan, but the visit takes an unexpected turn when Harry catches the attention of a shy little orphaned Japanese boy and his concerned aunt. Gilbert is the only one who seems to draw the boy out of his sorrows, and pretty soon a romance has blossomed with Aunt Kimi (Nobu McCarthy), too. But will Gilbert be able to leave everything in order to be with them?

THE GEISHA BOY allowed Jerry Lewis the opportunity to play some dramatic material; his scenes with Robert Hirano (as the little Mitsuo Watanabe) are adorable. This ... Read More

VHS : Prince & The Pauper (1937)
The Prince and the Pauper Great family classic. Wonderful story. One of my all time favorites. The only problem is the sound. Since it's an original and an oldie, the sound isn't so great. That's the only reason I gave it 4 stars.

10.Bullets Or Ballots (1936) starring: Edward G. Robinson, Joan Blondell, Barton MacLane, Humphrey Bogart, Frank McHugh

VHS : Bullets Or Ballots (1936)
Following his brutal portrayal in "The Petrified Forest," Bogart became a much more articulate and calculating killer in "Bullets or Ballots," a gangster thriller starring Edward G. Robinson as a crusading crime-buster, modeled after true-life cop Johnny Broderick, known as "the toughest cop on Broadway," who pretended to be thrown off the police force in order to infiltrate Bogart's gang and get the evidence to bring him to justice...

Bogart revealed no emotion whatever as he goes about his gun-happy chores of shooting a respected newspaperman as well as his partner-in-crime, Barton MacLane, in his characteristic double-cross...

The exciting finale found both Bogart and Robinson in a blazing showdown, an unusual ending for this period in film history, but one which Robinson had fought hard to retain...

William Keighley ... Read More
