VHS : The Journey of Natty Gann
This is a quietly touching adult film made by Disney long before they had their Touchstone division. Meredith Salanger gives a star-making performance as a teenage girl growing up with her father during the depression. A young John Cusack has a nice turn as well, already showing the kind of quiet and surprising talent he would become known for in coming years.

Natty's father (Ray Wise) finds the only work he can during the depression and reluctantly leaves Natty with someone who turns out to have no love or compassion in her heart for anyone but herself. He has gone to Washington to cut trees and leaves a letter promising to send for her, along with a locket containing a picture of her dead mother. But when no word arrives she runs away to find him, riding the rails. Ray Wise gives ... Read More

I've always been a big fan of this movie and was looking forward to adding the 30th anniversary edition to my DVD collection. Unfortunately, the movie arrived with the DVD off its hub and rattling around freely inside the case, resulting in catastrophic damage to the disc. I attempted to watch it anyway, but, not surprisingly, the disc was too badly damaged to be salvaged.

Amazon was prompt in sending me a replacement within twenty-four hours of my request for one. Sadly, however, the replacement DVD I received was in the same shoddy condition as the first, with the disc off its hub and bouncing around like a pinball inside, and irredeemably scratched as a result. I guess I'll give the replacement process one more try and hope that the third time's the charm.

I've been an Amazon customer ... Read More

First, I laugh at the critics who say this great anime had little character development, senseless violence, bad dubbing and sound. M.D Geist is not that, is a fantastic , war anime in space, that's actually very realistic. Also I saw that the Uncut Japanese, English subtitled version, not the crappy dubbed version these idiots watched. lol

The plot, and it's a great one is the Geist is part of space soldier team. They have a great war against an enemy and Geist is one the few men still alive. His platoon though deserts him, and leaves him for dead.

If the plot sounds familiar, its exactly like "Soldier" with Kurt Russell in animated form.

Geists though, only on brawn and brains survives and destroys everything in his path. Well not everything, he does come to a city invaded by a bunch of ... Read More

This movie isn't terribly accurate as to actual Boot Camp life, but it was filmed at Great Lakes Naval Station about 10 years before I was stationed there in 1962-3. The barracks, the furnishings, everything in the background shots look just the way they did when I was there. I thoroughly enjoy this movie everytime I watch it just for the memories!

VHS : Last Temptation of Christ
The Last Temptation of Christ is not quite a weird movie. If you're expecting profound blasphemy and other good stuff, this is actually tame like a punk that bought all their outfit at Hot Topic. For one thing, the movie dares show Jesus might have had a different mind than most people, one prone to breakdown that might lead him to imagine he's God. But there's not much point to showing this side since he is also shown performing every miracle. There's no dispute in the film to his superhuman status, which makes the fact that this film was so controversial very funny. Jesus comes across as kind of a spacey neurotic and more than a bit unprepared to be the magical son of God, but still it's faithful to Christianity in message. Much of his fear and doubt are just interpretation of the Bible and common sense take on the character.
