JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR has wonderful music and the movie made from it is pretty close to perfect. Shot creatively on location in the Middle East and filled with expertly rendered visual symbolism this musical has a unique take on the last days of probably the most influential person to ever live. No matter what one's spiritual beliefs JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR can give the open minded viewer new insights into a life that changed the world.

If you've seen and enjoyed the much more popular "Airplane" movies that made fun of the "Airport" series, this is the movie that got that brand of slapstick parody movie going. It is not sophisticated humor of any sort. It is not even a movie with a storyline really, so much as it is a series of several skits. Anyone who doesn't like puns must turn away now. This movie is full of them. While it is not a dirty movie per se, it is rated "R" and clearly not something you want your 9-year-old to see. There is some nudity that makes fun of pornography.

An important consideration is the age of the movie: If this were 1977, I'd give it the full five stars. Much of the satire is based on the TV commercials, politics, styles and social trends of the day. Anyone young enough to not ... Read More

The music is fantastic, the plot (after 20+ viewings) is still, to use the words of Richard O'Brien "Muddled...confused." I can't even begin to describe it to people. I heard in an interview with Patricia Quinn that one day during filming, Barry Humphries asked her "Pat? Do you know what this is about?" "No," she replied. That about sums this movie up, but it's good anyway.

I'm a proud owner of a copy of the video, and I whip it out at the slightest provocation. What I especially like about the movie is the rhythm, the feel of it. It belongs to no specific time, it's long-ago and it's now, and it's the future. It's almost alagorical, it's an absurdist perspective on media.

Wayne's second try at following Clint's lead from the sagebrush to a modern urban setting is basically a retread of Coogan's Bluff and it's not bad. There are still some right-wing complaints about civil liberties, but the tone is more amiable than McQ. Everything's pretty diverting until we get to the drawn-out "funny" bare-knuckle brawl that doesn't work here any better than it did a few years earlier in The Undefeated.

I'd never seen this before getting the DVD, or at least never seen the entire film. I knew all the songs already, and my husband says we saw it as a play, but if we did, a lot of stuff was cut out.

Milkman Tevye (Topol), his wife, and five (!) daughters in pre-revolutionary Russia. I remember my parents going to see this at the theater, probably back in 1971, when it was released, and listening to my mom and some of her friends swooning over Topol. I have to say, I can see their point. It's not the appearance, it's the character.

One by one, his older daughters buck tradition and choose their own husbands by falling in love: a penniless tailor, a revolutionary teacher, and a local, non-Jewish Russian boy. And despite his bluster at not being obeyed as the head of the household, one by one they ... Read More

Holy Schutt! I thought I was the only person in the world who saw any value in this piece of crap. I had openly told people that I would rather be diagnosed with cancer, or that I would rather be raped by a clown, than have to sit through this movie again. Yet... I have a copy on DVD and insist that guests in my home watch this. It kind of sums up all the horribly predictable and unimaginative humor produced throughout the late 80's and early 90's. Thank god the barbarian brothers are likeable, or my physical person would have transformed magically into poop, just from witnessing how horrible this movie was. Even though this movie was like having my balls stepped on with a high heeled shoe (for those of us that don't enjoy this, and I imagine we exist, it would be tortuous!), I still wouldn't use the 'safe word'. I ... Read More
