VHS : The Great Mouse Detective (A Walt Disney Classic)
Smoking, drinking, stripping and even gun violence. These are things you wouldn't expect from a Disney film. I saw the film when I was about 5 years old and remember thinking about how much fun it would be to be in the midst of a bar fight like the one in this movie. I will never forget how shocked I was to see the burlesque dancer take off her seemingly modest attire to reveal an hour glass half-dressed figure with a garter and blue fishnets. The reaction from the crowd, the sexual tension she created with her stripping- I wanted to be there!

Here's a quote from the song Let Me Be Good To You
"Hey fellas- i'll take off all my clothes. Hey fellas- there's nothing I won't do just for you!"

But apart from the bar scene, there were multiple depictions of drunkeness ... Read More

VHS : Sparkling Cyanide
This adaptation of Agatha Christie's novel Sparkling Cyanide (aka Remembered Death) by Sue Grafton (yes THAT Sue Grafton),Steven Humphreys and Robert Malcolm is a a great mystery movie. Not completely faithful to the original--the movie opens prior to Rosemary's death instead of one year after, Southern California vs. WWII England--but the main elements of the story are there, and it's a tight, well-written adapting of the plot. I've seen the movie many times and recently re-read the book and I couldn't say which I prefer.

VHS : Jekyll & Hyde - The Musical (Widescreen Edition)
In a nutshell.... This DVD is among the best I have seen regarding the quality of the video and audio. The 5.1 channel sound is very good, with clear definition of the voices. the video is absolutely stunning on my 42" plasma, with brilliant lighting and vibrant colors. Add to that is the filming on stage, showing the actual staging techniques while still allowing good close ups of the performers.

I rate the performers a little lower, but certainly they are adequate. Hasselhoff is a bit campy at times, and Oh that stringy hair! But he is not really "bad" and the score is strong enough to allow overlooking some aspects of his performance, ton which he certainly gives his all.

I liked the remaining cast members. Both ladies have good voices. I felt that "Lucy" was ... Read More

VHS : Challenge for Robin Hood (Ws)
Frankly, I may be overestimating this video, but it was my first Robin Hood movie and it is the one that has stuck with me the best. It has an excellent pie fight and it's fairly kid-friendly from what I remember.

VHS : The Tailor of Gloucester
What a pity this version of "The Tailor of Gloucester" is not currently available. Narrated by Lynn Redgrave with much English Christmas and Beatrix Potter lore included, this musical staging starring Ian Holm as the tailor is utterly enchanting. Dance, caroling, nursery rhymes, exquisite cat and mouse costumes, snow falling gently over a fairytale English town, charming actors -- it has it all. Please talk to someone about reissuing it! My old VHS tape, copied off public television years ago, won't last forever ...

VHS : Doctor Who & The Daleks
While still markedly different from the BRITISH SERIES Peter Cushing's performance as (the human) DOCTOR WHO is still fun.

VHS : Faerie Tale Theatre - The Emperor's New Clothes
THE EMPEROR'S NEW CLOTHES is an altogether fine entry in the FAERIE TALE THEATRE series.

Alan Arkin and Art Carney stars as the con-artists who fool a vain and ruthless Emperor (Dick Shawn) into believing that they can create the most exquisite of clothes that are invisible to those who are foolish or unworthy. Legendary British songstress Georgia Brown co-stars as a wise innkeeper.
