I watched this Thanksgiving themed movie in the 1970s with my then elementary aged daughter and we loved it! I looked for it for many years before finding it on Amazon. Although we have to be satisfied with a VHS version, we were both thrilled to sit together and watch it again after all of these years. It a charming, timeless story with a wonderful message of kindness and generosity. The "Holiday Treasure" should be a must see movie for all families. Thanks to Amazon, we were able to enjoy it again!

VHS : Cold Turkey (1971)
Well before smoking was the demon it is now, this film dared to take on Big Tobacco in the historically best way possible - by laughing at it. Publicity man Merwin Wren (Bob Newhart in one of his truly classic "Angry Little Man" performances) suggests that the tobacco companies put up 25 million dollars, to be awarded to the first town that can quit smoking for 30 days. A classic false deal, Wren explains, because what town could successfully quit smoking for a full 30 days?

Eagle Rock, Iowa. Under the inspiration of Rev. Clayton Brooks (Dick Van Dyke), the town sees the offer as a way to get back on its feet, and for such a little bit of sacrifice. Yeah, right...

The town becomes a center of media interest, not to mention great consternation to the tobacco companies. ... Read More

VHS : Past the Bleachers
I thought the movie was very good and touching. Richard Dean Anderson did a wonderful job, as always. The only problem I found with the story was that it didn't get detailed enough. The character had a couple of major events happening in his life and they just skimmed over them. The movie ends and you never find out how the big events turned out. Good story, good acting, and worth watching, it just has a couple of holes.

VHS : Hobo's Christmas
I watched Hobo's Christmas on TV one year and I thought it was pretty good and had a great cast, especially Bernard Hughes and Gerald McRaney. It is a Christmastime movie that has some sad scenes but nothing too melodramatic or sappy and all in all it has a great message about love, family and forgiveness perfect for the Holiday season!

I have loved this movie for years. I love Glenn Close in this movie so much. A total departure for Fatal Attraction that's for sure. I love the story line and the relationship between Mandy Patinkin and GC. It's very cute. Can't wait for this to come out on DVD.

VHS : Rage
Yes, it was the 70s. I saw this as a young father or 4, alone. My wife wouldn't go, she had read a review. Within the structure of the film there was much to breed hate and mistrust. The acting was as precise as a scalpel, thinly drawn and never over the line. I am relating my impressions of seeing this film in its original theatrical run over 35 years ago. Rage struck me right up front, full-faced, and it has never completely left my mind. Richard Basehart and Martin Sheen play off each other, and George C. Scott, with just enough character to give it a bitter taste of reality. The scariest thing is that they appear as people you would actually know in real life.

Viewing this Little movie on the little screen lost some of its impact due, I feel, to the lack of the VHS format to fill out a ... Read More

VHS : Where Are the Children
This movie is up there with Plan 9 from Outer Space; it's so bad, it's great. First the many bloopers: there are visible boom mikes. One can see a safety rope tied around Missy's ankle when they're on the widow's walk at the climax of the film. When Parrish "locks" Missy in the bedroom, she pounds on the door and cries ... yet she could easily unlock the door and escape just by turning the lock's knob that's right next to her face! Elements like this make the film an unintentionally hilarious pleasure.

My other favorite aspect of the film is the atmosphere. The day on the Cape is mostly overcast and rainy, and the soundtrack music somehow catches the feel of this atmosphere and compliments it perfectly. Kudos to the music director of this film.

But what makes this movie so exquisitely entertaining overall ... Read More
