VHS : The Thorn Birds - The Complete Miniseries
Overall well produced TV series and I watched intently with many emotions of passion, heartache, compassion, and joy for characters portrayed. The Stanwyk character was deplorable esp. with the line: on my mouth! YIKES!!! The aging process was well done for Cardinal Vittorio, Ralph, Grandma Fi, BUT Meggie looks more gorgeous every year, esp. the last scene, they tried to grey her hair, tho unevenly, during the same scene and nary a wrinkle....no biggie compared to her whisper yelling and flat dialogue, but very beautiful woman...Justine was prolly the worst cast in the series, waaay too wooden for a bohemian, maladjusted, wild child, head movements were even too stilted and not pretty enough to be Meggie's daughter...Dane portrayed the deepest expression of character as supported by the other ... VHS : Christmas in Connecticut
Bad direction keeps this movie from being good. In fact, even Barbara Stanwyck comes off looking awkward in some scenes. But she can never be truly bad. Her presence and a great supporting cast keep me watching this one again and again: (the usually weird) Sydney Greenstreet feels just enough out of place to be really fun, (the often overly cute) S. Z. Sakall gets to deliver all the sardonic jabs that keep the movie from being too sweet, and (the always wonderful) Una O'Connor is, well, just wonderful.

The one-reel extra, A Star in the Night, is the kind of pure Christmas schmaltz that will have any true holiday believers bawling on cue. And that alone is worth the price of purchase.

I thought I'd seen all the best holiday movies until stumbling upon an old VHS tape of Remember the Night last year. It's got romance, pathos, Americana, humor -- why on earth hasn't it been released on DVD yet!! I'd buy a dozen to give as gifts.

Well, it must be a good movie, since I never forgot what I have seen when I was 11. This movie was one of the first we got to watch in Bavaria, after the war. I am a little older now, but would like to see it again, mayby in the original, why not? Johannes.

I have seen most (if not all) of his movies. Errol has always been at the top of my list for free spirited actors. He was a rogue. His alcoholism did not help his acting any, but he managed to (in his younger years) be a fine actor with character and heart for the roll he was playing. The movie had a good plot but not enough (at least for me) interaction between him and Barbara. Because I am a very outspoken person, Barbara could have done a better job of standing her ground and confronting him, instead of sneaking around.

Thus says Barbara Stanwyck as only she can to Gary Cooper who then proceeds to nearly choke the liver out of her!! This film is lambasted by most critics (who don't know anything). But it is a fun movie to watch from start to finish! The characterizations by the principals are first-rate with Stanwyck the stand out. No one could beat her in a Western. And she's a baddie to boot, rotten to the core. Quinn and Cooper are excellent as well! With a haunting score (Frankie Laine singing the title song)this Western is a dandy.

VHS : All I Desire
The mark of director Douglas Sirk and producer Ross Hunter is all over this glossy melodrama. ALL I DESIRE gave Barbara Stanwyck one of her meatier roles during the lean years of the 1950s', playing a disgraced woman who returns to her hometown.

Based on the novel "Stopover" by Carol Ryrie Brink, the story concerns Naomi Murdoch (Barbara Stanwyck), a third-rate vaudevilian performer who abandoned her husband and children following a torrid affair in their tight-knit Wisconsin town. Ten years later, after receiving a heartfelt letter from younger daughter Lily (Lori Nelson), Naomi returns home to see her perform in the highschool play, re-opening old wounds and awakening painful memories.

With it's lush Edwardian period design, ALL I DESIRE is a very memorable movie, especially for fans of ... Read More

VHS : Double Indemnity
Double Indemnity is my first experience in traditional film noir and i quite enjoyed it. The film stood out to me in a number of ways, mostly the unique story and the look of the film. Double Indemnity's story was unique largely because the protagonist in many ways didn't seem to be a good person. It was one of those movies where its hard to completely identify with any of the characters yet it still remains interesting. I really liked the typical noir look that the movie had. I think the film is a fairly typical example of film noir and im looking forward to seeing more movies like it.

I had the priveledge to see one of the first screenings of the rediscovered un-cut version of this film a few weeks ago at Brandeis University, and I must say that the New York censor board truly did this film a disservice when it forced the producers to cut and change it. It was really great, but the most interesting part was at the end when they showed clips of the edited version to show what was changed, and it was astounding how rediculous the edits seemed in context of the meaning behind the film.
