VHS : Manions of America
This is the story of Rory O'Manion (Pierce Brosnan) from young adult hood and his fight against the oppressive English in Ireland. From the potato famine and loss of his mother, to his love for the English landlord's daughter Rachel (Kate Mulgrew: of Star Trek Voyager),and subsequent flight to the shores of America. From poor to rich in America, but still longing for the freedom for his beloved Ireland. Also starring Linda Purl (The Exorcist), Nicholas Hammond (Sound of Music, Spiderman), David Soul (Starsky & Hutch), and Simon MacCorkindale. Very moving, interesting to watch Pierce Brosnan in the early days of his career.

VHS : Bear Island
Bear Island is one of those movies I want to like more for all its cheesiness. Barely released theatrically, cut heavily for home video and rarely shown on TV, it marked the end of the big screen Alistair MacLean goldmine (subsequent adaptations would be straight to cable) and, pretty much, the viability of most of the cast as leading players - Donald Sutherland, Vanessa Redgrave and Richard Widmark in particular would soon be relegated to the little leagues or supporting roles. At times it's like a bad accent competition, with Richard Widmark's German and Christopher Lee's Polish faring better than Vanessa Redgrave's Norwegian ("Yuust becorzz somwun haas givan anne ohrdoor?") which at least adds a little variety to her usual flat delivery of dialog. Maybe Donald Sutherland should have tried one ... Read More

DOLLS!!! What may have been at the time of release "shocking" dialogue is why Valley of the Dolls will live in infamy. "Well Broad-way doesn't go for booozze and pills." Helen Larson tells Neeley O'Hara at the start of their catfight in the powder room. Great fun to watch with your best Gay friends. Great extras included. Packaging is well done and comes with lobby cards.

VHS : Shout at the Devil
I bought this on tape because of the actors and story line. I am not a critic on all the technical aspects of film making so I judge a movie on entertainment value. This one I found very enjoyable. The time period is approx. 1915-1918 and the war in Africa between the British and Germans. It has some very funny parts with the drunk Marvin and gullable Moore. The love interest adds just the right touch and unlike some reveiwers I think was needed to spice up the plot. It even has some flying for aviation buffs and a battleship for the navy fans. I found it fast enough paced to hold my attention from start to the grand climax. For an enjoyable evening without trying to disect the movie in all aspects it's a fun movie.

VHS : Breakfast in Paris
A successful boutique owner comes home early to surprise boyfriend during their one year anniversary and finds him with company: a young blond. His excuse? All she does is work. What does she do in her defense? Head off to Paris, not for a vacation, but for work. At the airport she is literally run over by an attractive but clumsy photographer who ends up sitting next to her in first class on the long flight from Melbourne to Paris. Being immediately attracted to her (surprise!), he relentlessly attempts to make conversation but his overtures are all met with cold disinterest and a bitchy attitude. Fortunately for him, resistance pays off and he gets a dinner date. He whittles away at her workaholicism and they have a romantic evening that doesn't end up with sex. "Don't come up, I'll call you." And she does! The ... Read More

This very Seventies, post-Rosemary's Baby (1968) horror thriller is remembered fondly by many viewers for its dated aspects. A pre-M.A.S.H. Alan Alda plays music journalist Myles Clarkson, whose own career as a pianist was earlier squelched by critical disdain. He lives modestly with his gorgeous wife (Jacqueline Bisset) and precocious child (perennial child star of the era, Pamela Ferdyn). Interviewing aging musical maestro Duncan Ely (Curt Jurgens), Alda is drawn into Ely's rich, sinister milieu that includes his far too young concubine Roxanne (an unforgettable Barbara Parkins, in perhaps her keynote role) and other wealthy Satanists. Alda returns to the piano with increased fervor following Jurgens' death, and has appeared to inherit his mentor's death supernaturally. But the devil must be paid his due, and soon ... Read More

Talented people made this movie, but the result was disappointing. Quinn Martin, who produced some outstanding crime dramas, tried his hand here at a Western. Unfortunately and uncharacteristically, Martin was unable to put together a solid crime story, strong characters, and a colorful backdrop. The movie's dabbling in sentimental, moralizing subplots, which have never been Martin's strength, only made matters worse.

The movie does not get high marks for creating a sense of place. It was tied down to a standard few sets and street shots, depicting an old southwestern town in a competent but not particularly noteworthy way. The mud in the streets sticks in the mind more than anything else.

The story was plodding and uncomfortably overlong for the minimal payoff. It failed to create interesting ... Read More

I had been waiting a long time to watch this film, and I'm a bit disappointed. The storyline is very weak and the premise for the entire film doesn't really work. While I enjoy campy, this is just too campy for its own good.

While some scenes were creepy enough, the entire film just didn't seem to be worthy of the praises it's receiving. I'd rather watch Mexican Gothic horror or outrageous B Horror films.
