VHS : Gone with the Wind
"Gone with the Wind" is a fabulous film, the film by which all others are gauged. It debuted in 1939, perhaps the year that produced the most high quality films of all time. Watching this film is like viewing a great painting. Every time I watch it I get something new. I also detect subtleties and insights I never recognized when I was younger.

I won't attempt to summarize this well-known film, because I see that there have been over seven hundred reviews before this one. I will tell you about a personal experience that some reviewers might find interesting.

Many years ago when I was a medical student, I spent three months as an observer on a psychiatric ward containing patients with mixed diagnoses. One of the patients was an inconspicuous old lady diagnosed ... Read More

VHS : Very Brady Christmas
I'm so happy to finally own a copy of this, even if it is on VHS. It really needs to be released on DVD!

Simple plot:

Mike wants to take Carol to Japan.
Carol wants to take Mike to Greece.

They each call all six kids, tell them their plans, but yet no one tattles. (Where's Cindy when you need her?) However, this is also when Bobby gets to deliver a classic line, after Mike asks him when to break the news to Carol, "After the first of the year, Dad." It's only when they run into each other at the travel agency that they figure out the snag in their plans. They come up with the idea to fly all of the family in for this Christmas, and voila, a reunion is planned. However, not is all well with the Brady family. Greg is missing his wife Nora, who chose ... Read More

VHS : I the Jury (1982)
This flick starts with a pre-opening credits teaser along the lines of the James bond films. Armand Assante, a forceful, charismatic actor grabs your attention and for the most part keeps it. The absolutely gorgeous Barbara Carrera makes a stunning femme fatale. Not a bad update of Spilanes first Mike Hammer book. It even retains the famous final line. Much truer to the hard-boiled private eye then the watered down tv version of the 80's.

VHS : I Remember Mama (1948)
I enjoyed this reminder of what my Norwegian ancestors experienced when they emigrated to this country. It brought back memories of my family stories of life back then, when life was much less complicated than we have today. Irene Dunne was exceptional in her role as Mama, as was the rest of the cast. Wonderful family film.

VHS : All This & Heaven Too
Most books are better than their film renditions, with a few exceptions. I personally enjoy the movie based upon Rachel Field's "All This and Heaven, Too" more than I ever liked the original novel. Not that the book is dull; it is based upon a true event. Rachel's great uncle married the infamous Henriette Deluzy-Desportes. Mademoiselle Deluzy was accused of complicity in a murder which rocked France and ignited the Revolution of 1848. After her release from the Conciergerie she fled to America where she married the Protestant minister Mr. Field.

The film, however, brings all the characters and their vying passions to life far better than does the novel. Charles Boyer wavers on the brink of insanity as the honorable but tormented Duc de Choiseul-Praslin. Scion of an ancient but impoverished family, ... Read More

VHS : Tower of London (1939)
When that martyr to morality, that paragon of piety Sir Thomas More had his head chopped off by the order of his master, Henry VIII, it's unlikely in those last moments that he asked forgiveness for the sliming of Richard III's reputation, which he accomplished while ambitiously working to curry favor with the Tudors. Richard was the last of the Yorkist line, a capable and honest king, as ruthless in politics as everyone else was at that time, and most likely, if he had not taken action, to lose his own head to the machinations of the Woodvilles, the family of Queen Elizabeth, widow of Edward IV, Richard's brother, and mother to the two young princes who were the immediate heirs to the throne when Edward died. We know that Richard took control of the princes, that they were lodged with great comfort in the Tower, that he had ... Read More
