VHS : The Story of Dr. Wassell / Movie
This movie I consider among my favorites. It is a true story of a doctor
who ended up on Java and saved many wounded men who were rejected entrance
into a ship leaving for safety because they could not get up and walk. It is
an amazing story and I am hoping someone will get it transfered to DVD before
it is beyond saving!

VHS : So Proudly We Hail
This movie was a real treat. Most war films focus on the military, front-line aspects, understandably, and it's rare to find one that centers around the nurses' experiences. It's a shame this film not more well-known--I found out about it when I read "Our Mother's War"--because it hits all the right notes. The three principles, Claudette, Paulette, and Veronica play off each other very nicely. They weren't just pretty faces, that's for sure!

Some things about the film may make today's viewers flinch, namely the act of calling Japanese people, "Japs." However, it is important to consider the point of view of those involved and of the initial audience. My paternal grandfather was a WWII vet, and until the day he died he always called Japanese people by that derogatory term. I don't ... Read More

VHS : Owen Wister's The Virginian (Universal Western Collection)
It had to be a thankless task to remake one of the classic Westerns of all time, one that has a special place in the heart of filmlovers because it was one of the first great talking Westerns.

Yet and still, Hollywood has never let a little thing like unenviable comparison stop from remaking a classic, which they did when they remade the classic western The Virginian, starring Gary Cooper, Walter Huston, and Richard Arlen, this time starring Joel McCrea, Brian Donlevy, and Sonny Tufts in the corresponding roles.

McCrea, who was a lot better than he gave himself credit, is solid as the unnamed Virginian who tries to steer (no pun intended, but if it works for you, I'm glad!) his fellow cowboy Steve away from the murderous cattle rustler Trampas, and then sets out for ... Read More

VHS : Wake Island
"Wake Island" is a movie shot right after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and Wake Island. The movie, therefore, has to be taken in the context of the times - creating great anger against inferior Japanese forces and raising up the temperature of American audiences for the coming fight for freedom. You get some great actors of their time in the film - Brian Donlevy, Robert Preston and the everyman William Bendix (always the Brooklyn guy in the army). Well worthwhile for the World War II junkie and historian.

Not the Sea Hawk or Captain Blood by any means, but still enjoyable. With a cast like Laughton,Carradine and Scott it can't be too bad.Historicaly not very accurate and a little hokey. But then again it doesn't claim to be factual.Laughton is great as the scheaming Kidd and Scott as the hero is his usually heroic self.If you are a fan of this type of film, and i am,you will enjoy this picture.

What a refreshing movie: intelligent dialog, great actors and actresses, a plot with many twists and turns, and funny too. Ronald Colman is superbly cast as the man who knows everything, Celeste Holms as the "Mata Hari" hired to bring him down, and Vincent Price as the eccentric captain of industry determined to trip him up. Refreshing too is that intelligence - not fame or beauty - is venerated.

I'd have given the movie a 5 star rating if it where not for the condition of the DVD transfer. In many places the audio sound is blown out. Some scenes are lost: in one particular scene, Vincent is standing under a funnel in his soap factor, poised to hit the level - in the next scene you see him soaked, why? I remember seeing this broadcast on TV when I was younger: he hits the lever and soap ... Read More
