The film "Cannery Row" is one of my all time favorites! Yes, I have read the novel "Cannery Row" many times and I love it and I did read "Sweet Thursday" many years ago. I know to some what I am about to say would seem sacrilegious, but I actually feel that this film improved the story of "Cannery Row". It gave the character "Doc" a love interest which helps to round out the story and made the whole flow of the story much, much better, omitting only parts of the book which were relatively minor. I especially appreciated the omission of the large number of deaths which took place in the first half of the book. In the film they would have just made the tone of the story wayyyyy too dark! I also like the amalgamation made with several characters in the book into one or two characters in the film ... Read More

Yes this is just a big soap opera, and most of the stories are just filler to set up the attack, but there is a strong feeling of a throw back to films of bygone days here that makes me like this even though i know it stinks. The attack last longer in this than it did in real life, and they keep leaping from it to some more soap opera filler that get very annoying after a while. The cast is ok but with all the corny line they have it's not really fair to say they are not good , they do what they can. I grew up in the 70's and these miniseries were a steady T.V. diet of the time,so some of my fondness for this mess is because it takes me back to younger days, and as such some will like it for that others will be less kind .

This is one of those movies that you catch on one of the cable stations late at night. Although I haven't seen it in years, I really, REALLY wish it would come to Blu-ray and DVD as suggested by many other reviewers/posters here at Amazon.

Kelly Preston's acting skills are a bit "overdone" but nonetheless, she manages to pull it off whereas Tim Daly and Rich Rossovich both shine. Audra Lindley - Mrs Roper from Three's company, does an AWESOME job as Miranda's mother in the office scene where she starts pulling out her hair! And Anthony Crivello as Aldice is also very convincing in his job as a satanist.

All and all, it was a VERY entertaining movie with a few corny parts tossed in for good measure, I presume. But definitely well worth the watch. The ending will shock and SCARE ... Read More

From the opening scenes accompanied with the opening sound track the similarities with a much better comedy "The Graduate" becomes clear. The Simon and Garfunkel-sounding clone track to the very "odd" ending borrow heavily from "The Graduate" formula. Both films cover taboo topics and things that just weren't done in those days designed to shock and entertain the audience at the same time. Both make heavy use of the popular music soundtrack with Burt Bacharach's doing here what Simon & Garfunkel's did to much better effect on "The Graduate". I sympathise with another reviewer who's just as confused as I was a couple of years back with the choices for AFI best ever comedies and I think the selection criteria had nothing to do with films that necessarily make you laugh until you split your sides but more so ... The movie was a bit melodramatic but very effective in making it's point. As a woman who was happily married for 27 of 29 years and only discovered my "true" sexuality at almost 50yrs old, I can relate to the hesitancy of pursing this type of relationship. Based on my experience, I found it depicted a fairly realistic view of a female to female relationship.
