VHS : Tennis Our Way
This is an excellent, comprehensive(and lengthy -- about 2 1/2 hours)video. Instruction and "tips" are given by tennis legends Arthur Ashe, Stan Smith and Vic Braden so there's plenty of variety in it. It covers tennis from basics to more advanced practices at a quick pace, but there's no problem folowing it ---especially with the "rewind" feature of your VCR once in a while. I'm an adult beginner player, and found this video very interesting and helpful. But I think players at all levels would still enjoy it.

VHS : Baseball - Inning 1, Our Game (1840s-1900)
Ken Burns' "Baseball" series begins by finding a simple metaphor in Ebbets field: built in Flatbush on a garbage dump called Pigtown where the Brooklyn (Trolley) Dodgers would play and some of the greatest moments in baseball history would take place, including the day Jackie Robinson played his first game in the Major Leagues. Then Brooklyn would finally win their first pennant, only to see the team move across the country. Thus, Ebbets field is where baseball changed forever, while remaining the same. From the very start, this documentary establishes itself as a first rate classic.

This "First Inning" in the celebrated mini-series that I watch again every spring, focuses on the beginnings of baseball up to 1900 (where each successive episode focuses on a specific decade). Burns ... Read More

VHS : Baseball - Inning 2, Something Like a War (1900-1910)
We still have snow on the ground but it is opening day of Baseball which means it is time to get once again watch Ken Burns' celebrated documentary on "Baseball" as a true rite of spring. The second volume, "Something Like A War" covers the sport's first decade in the 20th century. The decade begins with "Ban" Johnson creating the American League by sheer force of will (and the $500 more a season he offered players to bolt from the National League). Opposing Johnson was John McGraw, the great manager of the New York Giants, who was aided by Christy Mathewson, the Christian Gentleman who was Frank Merriwell incarnate. However, on the field the decade was clearly defined by the Detroit Tiger's Ty Cobb, for whom baseball was truly "something like a war." In contrast to the vitriolic Cobb, the ... Read More

VHS : Baseball - Inning 7, The Capital of Baseball (1950-1960)
If you are not a fan of New York baseball--as in Yankees, Dodgers and Giants--then this "inning" of Ken Burns' classic documentary series on "Baseball" is not for you because those three teams dominate this episode the way they dominated the game in the 1950's. From 1949 to 1958 there was a New York club in every World Series and in six of those series the Yankees battled the Dodgers or Giants. These were the Yankees of Casey Stengel, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and Mickey Mantle; the Dodgers of Walter Alston, Jackie Robinson, Duke Snider, Roy Campanella, Pee Wee Reese and Gil Hodges; the Giants of Leo Durocher, Willie Mays and Bobby Thompson. This was the decade that saw Willie Mays catch the blast from the bat of Vic Wertz and Eddie Gaedel walk on four straight pitches, where Thompson hit the most ... Read More

VHS : Baseball - Inning 8, A Whole New Ballgame (1960-1970)
"A Whole New Ballgame" always strikes me as being substantially different from the preceding seven "innings" of Ken Burns' celebrated "Baseball" documentary. Not only does it covers players and games I remember from my youth, most of the photographs and film clips are now in color, which seems somewhat out of place after having watched hours of images in black & white. Still, there are the soothing tones of John Chancellor, who represents the voice of spring for me each opening day when I watch "Baseball" from start to finish once again. This episode covers the Sixties, a decade that said goodbye to Ted Williams and hello to the New York Mets while economic issues continued to come to a head. The decade began with Mickey Mantle and Roger Maris chasing Babe Ruth's home run record and ended with ... Read More
