VHS : 12 Angry Men
'57 is a classic par excellence, but '97 does offer some interesting new features. I use both of the films as a means of processing a vast array of psychological concepts while working with first and second year college students. When I first stop the '97 version, I ask students if they heard anything at the onset of the film. There is a clever insertion of the line, "I'm gonna' kill you," as the sound track presents us with noise of a passing El train. Many of my students can't identify what the voice said, and some don't even remember hearing it.

The '97 cameras pan the room differently during the preliminary vote and do not allow us to see the effect of group conformity to the norm as it is registered in '57 version. The guilty vote is not as polarized as it may superficially ... Read More

VHS : Avalon
`Avalon' is a beautifully complete look at family life and how it becomes so easy for us to lose our focus on the important things in life the further we get from our roots. Barry Levinson, the writer and director of this beautiful piece of cinema, drew from personal experiences (members of his family even appear in the film) in order to create a very real and emotionally connected film that anyone can enjoy and relate to. At its heart it is a film about family, regardless of class distinction or nationality, and we all come from a family.

`Avalon' tells the story of the Krichinsky family, a Polish-Jewish family that moves to New England, one family member at a time, at the dawn of the 20th century. The younger generation wants to take advantage of their new land and make a success of themselves, ... Read More

I was lucky to see this film at a screening where Armin Mueller-Stahl talked to the audience (and even played his violin for us!). He was as charming as this film. The film is warm, thoughtful, charming and original. I was disappointed it did not do better. It deserved to. A true gem.

An exquisite novel, but Alas, too short!

And yet, it conjures unforgettable characters and evokes Prague in a way that makes you recognize it even if you've never been there.

It isn't just the main characters that are memorable, but all of the characters in this story, no matter how small a space they take up. Characters such as Orlik, the paleontologist who studies house-flies and who asked the narrator to examine Dutch and Flemish still-lifes of the seventeenth century "to check whether or not there was a fly in them", or the temperamentful ex-soprano who lived under Utz's apartment, or the man whose job was emptying garbage trucks, but who spoke English and was a writer, or the Ludvik and Zitek, other "garbage collectors" who were actually poets, writers, philosophers and out-of-work actors. ... At least that's what it meant to me. Replace "South America" in all reviews by the word "Chile", because that is where the story belongs in its cut and dry facts. A wealthy family, a Shakespearean love between a peasant's son and a land owner's daughter; betrayal, rage, passion, violence and murder, ghosts (spirits), rebelion and freedom: all these are just some of the ingredients portraid in the movie with a great line up, awsome landscape and fairly good soundtrack. If you ever visit Chile, please see this movie and you'll understand part of the Chilean character and history: under our modern facade, there's still Biancas, Pedros and Truebas.
The movie personally helped me see my own story and find new connections between myself, my family and the culture where I was born and raised: that of Chile's.

"KAFKA" is one of those movies that was both negelected by the audience and the critics, and very unjustifiably so. What's exactly wrong with this picture? Is it because a lot of Very Heavy-Thinking Bookreaders claim that the real Franz Kafka is untouchable, and so: not-filmable, and there for, when this is done anyway, it must be condemned even before one single frame is actually seen?

But this is not about Mr. Real Kafka, it's about Mr. Fictitious Kafka, even one without Franz as a first name. This Mr. Fictitious Kafka writes about men transforming into giant insects, yes, and who works as a clerk in a insurance agency, yes, and who, at nightfall, sees a giant castle hoovering above the town in the distance, yes - but for all this, director Steven Soderbergh and screenplay writer Lemm Dobbs should be praised, (yes, even ... While the specific story is about Nazis, Jessica Lange's portrayal of a daughter struggling to maintain her high opinion of her father in the face of mounting dark evidence does justice to such a terrible dilemma. This is a truly remarkable, if disturbing, film.
