VHS : The Hunley
This movie shows the first ever successful use of a true submarine in naval combat. Human history (for the literally the entire planet) was changed thereby. The one small drawback of this work may be that the truly profound implications of submarine warfare are not given nearly enough emphasis. Instead the events of the Hunley are sometimes forced to take a back seat to run of the mill movie themes: Dixon's love of his "Queenie", the Politics of Military generals, etc. Be that as it may, I loved this movie and highly recommend it. Five out of five stars!

5.Belizaire The Cajun starring: Armand Assante, Gail Youngs, Michael Schoeffling, Stephen McHattie, Will Patton
directed by: Glen Pitre

VHS : Belizaire The Cajun
Belizaire The Cajun is a tiny treasure worth tracking down. It's a star vehicle for Armand Assante; he's most likely the only actor you'll know by name, although you will recognize character stalwarts Stephen McHattie - an excellent bad guy, and Will Patton. Don't blink for the appearance of Robert Duvall who, along with Robert Redford, helped greenlight the project.

Assante carries the film almost single-handedly, with some appealing support from Gail Youngs as his on and off girlfriend. He plays Belizaire Breaux, a medicine man in the rural backwoods - not to say bald cypress swamps - of mid-19th century Louisiana, deep in Cajun country. While the Cajun folk have more tenure in the area; their well to do landowner neighbors have more clout, including a Cajun sheriff in their pocket. ... Read More

VHS : 1492 - Conquest of Paradise (Widescreen Edition)
I go to movies for entertainment, and unless the movie has been touted as a 100%, bona fide accurate portrayal of the subject, then I have no problem if facts are embellished. This is Ridley Scott's vision of Christopher Columbus and his quest for the New World, and he has artistic license to create his vision and in my opinion did so magnificently with this film. I never got the feeling that Columbus was made a hero by this movie. The portrayal I saw was of a deeply flawed, brilliant man who did in fact commit great wrong against the natives, and returned to Europe completely demoralized. A broken man. And enough about Depardieu's accent. I understood him most of the time and even when I didn't, I still understood at least what was going on. I thought his acting was impeccable. The character of Moxica in particular ... Read More

VHS : Rage of Angels
This highly successful tv-miniseries is perhaps the one that ignited the success of the miniseries genre. Although, there are others who came before this, it was RAGE OF ANGELS who ignited the "mania." Of course, there was Richard Chamberlain starring in all those other successful miniseries based on books and him as a King of the genre but it was Jaclyn Smith's "Jennifer Parker" that gave the glitter and excitement and that finally,a woman is about to claim a throne and she really shine in this beautifully adapted version of Sidney Sheldon's novel.

All of a sudden, people started rushing to read and re-read the book and even the video released during the 80's was a big hit. People who have seen the movie on tv wanted to get a copy and you can hear people talking about the movie during lunch time or coffee break.

VHS : Mambo Kings
While the film THE MAMBO KINGS is not as detailed or insightful as Oscar Hijuelos's novel THE MAMBO KINGS PLAY SONGS OF LOVE which won the 1990 Pulitzer prize it is still an excellent entertaining film. The most striking feature of the movie is how well it makes 1950's Cuban American life in upper Manhattan live again complete with wonderful mambo and other Latin music of the period and even a visit from Desi Arnaz (played by his son with amazing accuracy).

The two Mambo kings are the Castillo brothers - Cesar and Nestor - musicians who fled Havana after a bloody dispute with a nightclub owner. Cesar is the ambitious older brother played perfectly by Armand Assante. Assante magically captures Cesar's sleazy good looks and coarse confident charisma. As one character in the film says of Cesar "He thinks he is the last Coca Cola ... Read More
