VHS : Shrek 2 (Full Slip)
This was robbed of the Best Animated Feature by the overated "The Incredibles", and this is hilarious. You'll laugh from beginnning to end, I assure you.

VHS : Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down! (ATAME!)
Someone should have informed the makers of this movie that women do NOT enjoy being beaten unconscious, held prisoner, victimized. The ridiculous plot glorifies this disgusting behavior and it is sickening. Lame attempts at humor fail, rampant drug use is also portrayed and glorified. Is the audience actually to believe the woman would fall in love with her attacker and live happily ever after? The only thing they got right was rating it NC-17. NO minor should see this movie. Calling itself a comedy does not a comedy make. I tossed this one into the trash. There are plenty of other far superior Antonio Banderas films to watch.

VHS : Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown
Pedro Almodovar, an internationally and critically acclaimed Spanish director, takes eccentricity and neuroses to new heights in WOMEN ON THE VERGE OF A NERVOUS BREAKDOWN, one of his most well known films. Pepa (Carmen Maura), an actress, has just been left alone and pregnant by her lover. It turns out that this situation is only one of many problems that she encounters. Her friend, Candela (Maria Barranco) is having a crisis of her own. Then, there's the matter of the gazpacho that Pepa has prepared--spiked with thirty sleeping pills--but, I won't ruin that part of the story for you as to what prompts her to prepare such a sleep-inducing dish. The whole mood is comparable to a telenovela (Spanish language soap opera). The atmosphere is melodramatic (hence, the reason for the title), desperate ... Read More

VHS : Matador
This is a brilliant, if unsettling movie. On its surface, it revels in various sorts of violence, including attempted rape, bullfights gone bloody, and serial killings, real or imagined. Beneath the flashy surface, though, Almodovar has a serious aim. He's examining the effects on his contemporary Spanish characters of a religion that was frequently rigidified into pharisaism and a code of manly behavior often reduced to mere "machismo" during the immediately preceding reign of Franco. What he presents us with in the film is a set of characters malignly influenced by such cultural baggage. Though seriously disturbed, they are at the same time both moving and unwittingly comic. Diego, the gored bullfighter and Maria, the lawyer, both buy heavily into the "machismo" code and wind up confounding a delight ... Read More

VHS : Andrew Lloyd Webber: The Royal Albert Hall Celebration
Although I usually prefer classical music or pre-1950s popular music, I do enjoy the music of Andrew Lloyd Webber. This is a very good sampling from his musicals. My only complaint is that some of the singing is not as good as it should be. Except for the opening number which was poorly sung, it sounded OK until I heard Sarah Brightman and Kiri Te Kanawa towards the end of the concert. Then I realized how much better this concert would have been if it had all been sung by singers of their skills.

Tarintino returns with his steady cast of players for another supremely entertaining show. Four Rooms moves the talent around with Tim Ross running with the lead.

The cast is, as always in Quentin's movies, fabulous.

The script, as always in Quentin's movies, fabulous.

A don't miss for Tarintino fans. A should see for just about everyone else 8 to 80.

The Good Things
*Lots of good action scenes.
*Very excellent, solid filming style and quality. A vast improvement over its predecessor "El Mariachi."
*Not a bad story.
*It's well written.
*Not bad characters. Maybe not as good or memorable as "El Mariachi," but they are fun.
*Good music.

The Bad Things
*Ummm...

The Questionable Things
*A fair amount of absurdity. Some may like it, others won't.

This sequel to is a tremendous improvement over "El Mariachi" in terms of style, action, cameramanship, and overall quality. Only the story and characters seem superior in the predecessor, but are still fun in "Desperado." Anybody who enjoys action films should enjoy this.

The DVD has very good video and sound quality. It is mostly ... Read More

VHS : The House of the Spirits
At least that's what it meant to me. Replace "South America" in all reviews by the word "Chile", because that is where the story belongs in its cut and dry facts. A wealthy family, a Shakespearean love between a peasant's son and a land owner's daughter; betrayal, rage, passion, violence and murder, ghosts (spirits), rebelion and freedom: all these are just some of the ingredients portraid in the movie with a great line up, awsome landscape and fairly good soundtrack. If you ever visit Chile, please see this movie and you'll understand part of the Chilean character and history: under our modern facade, there's still Biancas, Pedros and Truebas.
The movie personally helped me see my own story and find new connections between myself, my family and the culture where I was born and raised: that of Chile's.

Don't just buy this dvd. Buy two copies because you will wear out the first one quickly! This is my family's FAVORITE movie EVER! It is telling that in this film, Antonio Banderas is NOT the hottest guy in the movie! In fact, he can be annoying in it. This movie needed to be longer. Maybe a few hours longer. And the leader's name is Buliwhys, not Bulvine. Just buy it.
