***** Spoiler Alert *****

Hats off to Mr. Eastwood for getting me to watch a film about women's boxing. I believe that boxing (regardless of gender) is largely barbaric and distasteful.

Add to that, women's boxing is made up in part by ex-prostitutes and ex-strippers, which means that we are heading into degrading territory. Even Frankie deemed female boxing a freak show, rendering him highly reluctant to get involved.

The true heart of this movie is a father-figure daughter-figure love story.

Frankie had to overcome the following to give Maggie her final gift:

1) ethical concerns
2) legal concerns
3) the guilt-inducing part of Catholicism that would have him go against his heart
4) the life-driven part of ... Read More

I'm guessing this film would have been one heck of a lot better had there been a bigger budget for it. It comes off as a project made with limited resources and time, but one that also conveys a sense of passion on the parts of the director and producers. I saw this film the first time years ago after playing a football game in which Erik Anjou took part. My colleagues (a bunch of Army officers drinking beer on Sunday morning at West Point) had no idea who this guy Erik was, but our boss, his host, passed around a copy of this movie on VHS after the game telling us our guest beer-drinking footballer had directed it. The general impression was that Erik, a genuinely nice guy by the way, had been lucky to have cast Teri Hatcher before her fame. The movie is really raw in most respects except for ... Read More

"With fellow critics, I got involved in a conversation about the underlying reality of the film. Was it all a flashback - or a flash forward? What was real, and what was only in the hero's mind? Are even the apparently "real" sequences the product of his imagination?" Roger Ebert

My best friend urged me to view 'Jacob's Ladder' after we had discussed philosophies of life and death. I remembered reading about Jacob's Ladder from the Bible 'Jacob's vision in which he saw a stairway from earth to Heaven with angels descending and ascending.' Little did I realize that this film was the reality.

This film is not like anything I have ever seen. It is a viscerally frightening film that kept me on the edge of my seat. It opens with a scene in the Mekong Delta. Jacob Singer, ... Read More

VHS : Humanoids From Deep
Noticeably taking several cues from big budget horror films, Humanoids from the Deep still manages to create an enjoyable atmosphere and a few unique thrills to retain an air of originality. Combining an infinitely absurd plot with serious actors, decent gore effects, gratuitous nudity, and a pervasive foreboding score from James Horner culminates in a low budget horror flick that nearly breaks free of such impediments to offer plenty of scares and laughs, mostly in that order.

In this Roger Corman produced monster movie, a small coastal village finds themselves facing a deadly invasion when DNA testing on local sea life causes mutated amphibious monstrosities to rise from the waters and begin preying on the villagers - and attempting to mate with human women.

With their large, ... Read More

VHS : Porky's II: The Next Day
I saw this movie years ago on HBO & just recently bought it on VHS. Porky's II is actually good, in spite of itself. Pee-Wee & the gang are back for more adventures & more jokes. Although I missed Porky himself, I enjoy watching this movie. I especially enjoy the payback paid to the crooked Reverend Flavel, Commissioner Gebfart, the City Council & the KKK. Porky's II does have a few slow moments, but nevertheless it is enjoyable to watch to get a few laughs.
