VHS : Midnight Lace
Fog-shrouded London is the setting for MIDNIGHT LACE, a glossy thriller starring Doris Day as a terrorised heiress.

Doris Day plays Kit, an American heiress, newly-married to suave English businessman Tony Preston (Rex Harrison). Kit's life couldn't be happier, until she becomes the target of obscene phonecalls and begins to have 'accidents'. The detectives at Scotland Yard begin to feel that perhaps Kit is seeking attention, and even Kit's loving Aunt Bea (Myrna Loy) has her doubts. Is Kit going mad? Or is a killer really out to get her?

Doris Day delivers a finely-pitched performance in this frothy thriller. In order to convey the reality of her character's situation, Ms Day drew from her abusive first marriage to musician Al Jordan. The painful memories that ... Read More

We just saw this movie on TV and while it probably deserved the 2 stars the TV rating gave it, we had a ball watching it. This movie has it all! Cowboys, Indians, Train Robberies, Mexican Missions, Prostitutes, Gushing Fake Blood, and Samurai. What more could you ask for in a Western.

VHS : Three for the Show
Julie (Betty Grable) and Vernon Lowndes (Gower Champion) are a great team. He writes 'em and she plays 'em on the stage, but their team is incomplete. Julie's former husband Marty Stewart (Jack Lemmon) used to co-write the shows, but he was killed during the war, or at least that is what everyone thinks. In reality, Marty was marooned on an island; it was another Martin Stewart that died. Julie and Vernon are in for the shock of their lives when Marty returns and anticipates home sweet home, but finds himself involved in a case of bigamy.

This film has some great music, especially the Gershwin and Porter songs. Unfortunately, most of the musical sequences come off as bizarre thanks to the way they suddenly appear as if out of nowhere. For example, it takes some time to adjust to the ... Read More

VHS : Dial M for Murder
Alfred Hitchcock had already begun work on Rear Window when he took on the project to direct Dial M for Murder, based on the successful play by Frederick Knott. For the film, Hitchcock chose to cast his favorite leading lady of the time, Grace Kelly, as the embattled Margot Wendice. Kelly would also star in Rear Window and Hitchcock's subsequent To Catch a Thief. It wasn't Hitchcock's preference to shoot Dial M for Murder in Warnercolor 3D (the cameras were large), and the film is seldom screened in 3D, but Hitchcock's use of the technique is notable for its service to the story rather than just being a gimmick. In the film Margot Wendice is a wealthy heiress whose playboy husband, Tony (Ray Milland), recognizes his dependence on his wife's fortune. When Tony begins to suspect he is losing Margot's ... I saw this movie when I was 16 years old and I never forgot it. I went back to the theatre several times because I enjoyed it so much. When I was older, I rented the movie to see if it was as really as good as I recalled it to be. I was just as impressed with it when I was 30 as I was when I was 16. I can still say(and I am 59 years old) tthis was the best horror film I ever saw and definitely the one I thought was most memorable in my life. It was all due to the fantastic color and acting. I have seen other movies with Oliver Reed and Yvonne Romain and I can say that they were my favorites in the horror film industry. Oliver Reed in anything was fun to watch.

7.The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes starring: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Ida Lupino, George Zucco, Alan Marshal

VHS : The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes
Sherlock Holmes (Basil Rathbone) faces off against his arch-enemy, Professor Moriarty (George Zucco), in this installment of the vintage detective series. This movie is a great deal of fun, mostly due to the excellent performances, most notably Rathbone's. However, I can't help but feel disappointment that they choose to make Dr. Watson (Nigel Bruce) into a comic buffoon rather than the capable assistant he was in Arthur Conan Doyle's stories. I also wish they had adapted one of Doyle's tales instead of a Broadway play based on the character. Oh well, it's still fun, and Zucco is an excellent Moriarty

A tawdry and twisted boardroom farce and journalistic spoof. Top notch performances throughout. Equal in caliber in every way to Robert Harris' book, which is a tremendous beach read with serious message. It's chilling to think that the history of Nazi Germany was almost re-written by a drunken gun-nut forger and his emotionally-unhinged dupe. Although very talky, it never drags. Pacing is carefully managed and a four-hour movie goes by quickly. Owing to the length, there is more than enough technical detail about business negotiations, document forensics, historical research, and tabloid journalism to satisfy any geek, but it's never overdone.

It also has willfully goofy moments that leaven a ghastly subject with highly-appropriate satirical humor.

9.Under the Volcano starring: Albert Finney, Jacqueline Bisset, Anthony Andrews, Ignacio López Tarso, Katy Jurado

VHS : Under the Volcano
Terrible movie, mostly because of the inadequate screenplay. But it might be impossible to film UNDER THE VOLCANO, just as it is impossible to film ULYSSES, because the story is told through the hero's interior monologue. The external events are mundane, boring. The drama is internal.
Also a terrible waste of Albert Finney, a perfect choice for the Consul. The artificiality of the situations (the movie was made on location in Mexico, but feels every bit as artificial as a movie made on a Hollywood soundstage) hamstrings him, and I don't feel he was properly directed by Huston. His drunk act doesn't quite work.
On the bright side, Jacqueline Bissett has never looked so pretty, and her performance is good.

Forget the movie, but go to Netflix and order the bonus CD, which includes the excellent 1976 ... Read More

VHS : Haunted Strangler
Filmed in '58, 'The Haunted Strangler' is a somewhat entertaining English horror/murder mystery from '58 starring the legendary Boris Karloff.

Plot: Set in London, England circa 1860, accomplished writer James Rankin (Boris Karloff) develops an obsessive interest in a twenty year old series of can-can girl killings. His investigation into the matter eventually unveils a harsh (and I might say totally expected) reality bringing dire and deadly circumstances when the truth is finally uncovered.

While Boris Karloff delivers a fine performance, the real interest in this now OOP DVD is the presence of the very sexy Vera Day in the role of the ill-fated Pearl, the first victim in a new series of killings. Vera was a very popular model in England in the mid-to-late fifties. Of the few films she appeared in, 'The Haunted ... Read More
