VHS : Lord Peter Wimsey: Clouds of Witness
Dorothy L. Sayers writes many non-fiction books however among her best is the Lord Peter Wimsey series. I came to this series sort of though the back door. My first taste was the BBC productions with Petherbridge as Lord Peter that can now be found on DVD ASIN: B000062XDX. So I read all of Dorothy's books containing the relationship of Lord Peter Wimsey and Harriet Vane. Now it is time to go through the whole series.
Now I watch the one I missed in PBS. The first thing I notices was that Ian Carmichael talks much faster than Petherbridge. And all the people seem older. Of course Peter was supposed to be older when he met Harriet.

Lord Peter returns from Corsica. To find his older brother the Duke of Denver (David Langton) practically accused of murder. What is worse is his ... Read More

Blood on Satan's Claw (Piers Haggard, 1971)

Overacted, underdirected seventies exploitation trash. I'd call it "plotless", but after reading a number of interviews and listening to a lot of commentary, I have come to realize there was a plot-- but either the movie is so badly-directed or was so badly cut by the censors (though I understand the version I watched was restored) that the plot was impossible to understand without the supplementary material.

In any case, it's about a 17th-century village in which people start coming down with a disease they call Satan's skin (the original title of the film). Meanwhile, a group of the village's children are falling under the spell of Angel Blake (Linda Hayden), a local girl who seems to be a rather powerful witch. Arrayed against ... Read More

After Susan Hampshire had played Fleur Forsyte, Becky Sharp, and Lady Sarah Churchill for the great BBC miniseries of the late 60s and early 70s it might have seemed inevitable that she was called upon to play her greatest part, Lady Glencora M'Cluskie Palliser, when the BBC decided to adapt Trollope's six "Parliamentary" novels over the period of three years beginning in 1974. Oddly enough, as she explains in an interview extra on this DVD, the part was originally slated to be played by Hayley Mills. But when Mills had to bow out for personal reasons, Hampshire was called to play the part she was almost born to essay, and the greatest treat in this terrific Victorian soap opera is watching her lovely and loopy "Lady Glen," the wealthiest titled woman in England who is yet so childlike and insecure ... VHS : Doctor Who - The Colin Baker Years
In my humble opinion the BBC did an admirable job in sacking
Colin Baker as Doctor Who.His representation of the Doctor was
at best abysmal. He seemed totally disinterested in breathing new
life into a character that after Tom Baker had become mundane.
While Jon Pertwee,Tom Baker and Peter Davison contribute their
enrgies into making the Doctor brilliant, witty, thoughtful, comical
irriverent and human:Colin Baker contributed none of the
aforementioned. He portrayed the Doctor as petty,self-serving and
inconsiderate.I wish the BBC in its wisdom would consider some
of the previous actors and their contributions in choosing the
new Doctor for the upcoming 2005 season.Let us hope BBC can do
better than choosing a Colin Baker and his ilk for the Doctor ... Read More

I hear the complaints about the special effects, but this is coming from our (spoiled) age of hi-tech glamour, where the animals are so spoon-fed real now you practically don't have to use your imagination at all anymore! I'm sure in 30 years people will laugh at the effects in JP #3 and say a kid could do better graphics on their toy PC...........anyway, I'm nostalgic.
I remember seeing this movie as a kid and I thought it was HUGE. What a cool story! A lost unknown island in the Antarctic, where dinosaurs still live and time bends, the people trying to survive and then getting trapped.....losing contact with the outside world, possibly for the rest of their lives. We sure don't see that kind of excitement in Central IL. You wont' find this one at any video store though, it's gone the way of its dinosaurs. ... Read More

I truly enjoyed Alan Arkin in this film, and found some of the scenes absolutely hilarious!

Deserving of a "G" rating it is not, however. "PG" would better inform prospective viewers.

Glenda Jackson gives the performance of her life as the Virgin Queen. Far superior than any big screen treatment devoted to the life of Elizabeth I, this excellent British mini-series is at once historically accurate and highly entertaining. Costumes are spectacular and sets authentic-looking, but it is the superb writing (much of it culled from the historical record) and inspired acting that conspire to bring the past vividly to life. The Tudor Court supplies an endless stream of plot-twists: factions, rebellions, rivalries, tortures, beheadings, murders, suicides, romances, diplomacy, treachery, war--you name it. An hour and a half in length, each episode is a movie unto itself. My one complaint is that the French are caricatured, and Catholics are portrayed as effeminate, mad, or downright evil.

Episode One begins near the ... Read More

VHS : Doctor Who - More Than 30 Years in the Tardis
I bought this tape thinking it would fill in some of the blanks in my Who awareness, since I've seen numerous episodes but out of order and very incomplete, with entire doctors and bad guys missing, and no particular sense of continuity. While this special is a quite wonderful celebration of all that is Who, it is really either for someone who has never seen the show and wants a very basic overview or, more likely, for the serious fan, who wants both a recap of much of what has gone on and some after the fact interviews and special footage.

I was hoping for a bit more of a chronology, with the highlights of each doctor's reign and a little bit more about each of them as well as the key monsters and companions, but the overview was more slight than that. And despite the title, there was virtually nothing about the Tardis itself, ... Read More
