VHS : Out on a Limb Miniseries
Shirley Maclaine's willingness to risk ridicule with her candor is to be commended. She powerfully states what many people fear to speak of. This book inspired me and in fact, if the title had not been taken, may very well have been the title for "Blessings In The Mire." Because she is such a celebrity figure, Maclaine risked more than an average joe. By expressing her beliefs, she opened herself up to the skeptics, the critics, the hecklers. If for nothing else, Ms. Maclaine should be commended for her candor and bavery, but with this statement aside, the book stands on its own for being extremely thought provoking, for creating dialog between believers and skeptics, and for being an extremely well written volume. KUDOS to to Shirley Maclaine for her skill and talent as a proficient author. ... Read More

I have seen this movie and am currently trying to find it on DVD. It truly is a reliable account of the events leading up to the founding of the state of Israel. It really should be shown in high school history classes.

VHS : Out on a Limb - ABC Video Version
Quick to capitalize on the skyrocketing success of Shirley MacLaine's '83 bestselling book `Out on a Limb' Shirley and ABC Network released this 160 minute miniseries of the same name in '87. `Out on a Limb' was highly anticipated television event aired on two consecutive nights, January 18-19 (that was a Monday and Tuesday if I remember correctly).

I was one amongst a multitude of fans who couldn't wait for this show to air and made sure I had sent the allotted time set aside to view without interruption. Hard to believe as it may seem, that was before the advent of home recording devices so you were at the mercy of Network scheduling. You either watched at the appointed time or missed out (yes, it was a primitive time to be alive).

The miniseries lived up to my every expectation. ... Read More

VHS : Green Hornet-13 Episodes
`The Green Hornet' is, overall, a pretty good serial. Certainly it is a darn sight better than the superhero movies made since about, say, 2005, when suddenly Batman was willing to confess his true identity to a deputy DA just because he has the hots for her, or since 2006, when we learned that Superman was a dead-beat dad and a stalker (and don't get me started on the Fantastic Four or `Spider-Man 3': blech!). `The Green Hornet' features a hero unencumbered by ridiculous modern angst and subplots, who is good in a fight, yet is only able to perform feats that actual human beings could conceivably perform.

This serial has a good plot, or rather a series of good plots, that are much more grounded in reality than most other serials. It does not involve super-powers, magic, outer space, or super ... Read More

VHS : Baby M
I just watched this movie recently for the first time in many years. As you may know, "Baby M" is the story of a suburban home-maker (Mary Beth Whitehead) who decided to be a surrogate mother for an affluent professional couple from Tenafly (Betsy & William Stern.) But after the birth of her daughter (named Sara Whitehead by her mother, Melissa Stern by her biological father, and otherwise known as "Baby M") Mary Beth knew that she could not part with her own flesh and blood.

I found this movie to be very biased and favorable only towards the allegedly-infertile couple. The performance of JoBeth Williams (portraying Mrs. Whitehead, now Mrs. Gould) was somewhat over-the-top. It was like she became this hysterical, screaming zombie after her baby was born and the producers did nothing to explain ... Read More

VHS : What Waits Below
I just finished watching this movie and I must admit I didn't have high hopes. However, this turned out to be a good movie. During a test of a low frequency transmitter, two men and the transmitter disappear. A team is dispatched to search the caves where the test took place - caves that have never before been explored. But what waits below they could never imagine.

This story turned out to be quite original, 20 years before THE DESCENT. The script is far from perfect but it works, and the acting may be the best aspect of the movie. Violet Pretty makes the film that much better. Oh - that's Anne Heywood, better known from the 1967 adaptation of D.H. Lawrence's THE FOX. It's hard to believe that anyone who was born with the name Violet Pretty would want to change it.

They did a pretty ... Read More

VHS : Salome's Last Dance
This is easily the best version of Oscar Wilde's play out there, if only because it's a comedy. All other versions of Salome act as though the overly loquacious protestations of love and ridiculous tragedy are meant to be taken seriously and not tongue-in-cheek. Wilde wrote the play not as the supposed love poem that some "scholars" suggest, but instead as a parody of the melodrama popular at the time. Salome was the first camp classic and now Ken Russel allows us to experience as it was meant to be seen.

Later Richard Strauss would turn Wilde's work into the odd sort of psychological drama of his opera. And if that's what you want to see buy a version of the opera, don't try to force the play to become it. Allow for the play to be what it is.
