VHS : The Magnificent Ambersons
This 1942 classic was written, produced and directed by Orson Welles (who is also the narrator) and based on the 1918 novel of the same name by Booth Tarkington.

The movie chronicles the life of Isabel Amberson/Minafer (Dolores Costello) - a matriarch of an Indianapolis family dynasty - and her pompous son, George Minafer (Tim Holt), who destroys what has taken several generations to create due to his jealousies and greed.

With the backdrop of old money and the new ways to seize a slice of the American Dream, it is a timeless story of a perilous journey on eroding trails in life during the heavy rains and cold crosswinds that are bringing permanent change.

The original rough cut by Welles clocked in at an epic length of 2-hours, 28-minutes, but he ultimately ... Read More

The extras alone are worth the price of the set. First, the movie is 2-1/4 hrs. long, and never seems to drag. Second there are two feature-length commentaries (the 2nd is the superior). Then there's the 2nd disk with wonderful insights into the people involved in the movie, the personal interactions, the lives of the cast and crew. Heck, the 2nd disk alone is worth the price of admission.
I have over 400 DVD albums, and this is one in the top ten-percent.

I used to watch this movie on the Disney Channel before it was booted off the network. I also used to watch "Susie Q" and the original "Freaky Friday." Why did they get booted off? They were such good movies! This probably had to be my favorite because I used to wonder what it would be like to go to the "Mommy Market" and pick up a new mom. The only bad thing about this movie is that it's not on DVD. If it was on DVD, then I would buy it. I think that it's a waste to buy it on VHS. I don't even watch videos anymore! Other than that, I love this movie!!

VHS : Follow the Sun: The Ben Hogan Story
Being a golfer and a fan of the sport for many years, I was very interested in seeing this, which I did when the VHS first came out. Later, I saw it again because of the same reason plus I usually find Glenn Ford's films entertaining.

Well, the story moves well, it didn't bore me, but I did have problems with the accuracy of it and the general theme of the film, telling us that Hogan really was a nice guy who cared lot about what the public thought. From every account I have read, and from a couple of people who met him or knew him, that was not true. The fact is that he was a mean SOB and remained that way most of his life. This movie looks like it was made by his press agent. It's ridiculous and ruins what otherwise is an inspiring story.

No one can deny Hogan's achievements on the links ... Read More

I saw this movie a few months ago and parts of it stay with me. I thought it was a nice attempt to summerize the moods, trials, and perspectives of the folks at home during WWII. In attempting such a bold purpose, it takes a few liberties. Unfortunately, those liberties have tended to stay with me longer than the rest of the movie. One of the artistic licenses was a drive through the park on a Sunday afternoon. As our characters drive along, they pass one ethnic group after another; each doing their own cultural "thing" often in their unique cultural dress. The message is meant to be about America welcoming all groups into embrace but it's hard not to notice, from 60 years down the road, how nobody seems to be assimulating and none are interacting with each other.

The other artistic liberty was ... Read More

6.I Confess starring: Brian Aherne, Charles Andre, Anne Baxter, Nan Boardman, Montgomery Clift

VHS : I Confess
This is the classic Hitchcock thriller. Wonderfully done, it takes place in Montreal. The movie begins with a Catholic priest hearing the confession of a man who just committed murder.

Of course, the priest can say nothing. He cannot even say whether or not he even heard the confession of the man.

The Catholic Church is treated respectfully in this 1950s movie. (Which is probably why it is never shown on TV!) It is not a religious movie by any means, but it is, like so many Hitchcock movies, an excellent character study on life, choices people make and how people behave under incredible stress.
