VHS : Scarlett (Special Collector's Editon)
Great book. Written in sense of "Gone with the Wind." Good character development. Really saw the growth of Scarlet, from self-centered child to caring young woman. Always had the feeling, unlike the film, that it was Scarlet and Rhett. Set in Irish history background.

This movie is so wonderful. I loved it when it originally came out in the early 90's then redisovered it after my own father passed away. This movie should be released to DVD and for all of those who missed it I'm sad for you this movie has all the right punch; comedy, darkness, and drama. If you get the chance watch this movie you will be so glad you did.

VHS : Nixon
As a filmmaker I appreciate Oliver Stone, his provactive, political, conspiratorial, curious, enigmatic, ominous visions of Americana are the stuff of high entertainment. Right or wrong, his works are wonderful cinema, it doesn't matter if his version is slanted to the left, it is a distinct vision and he is skilled at executing it.
Be that as it may Nixon is no JFK. Though both are named for presidents of the same era, one is about a murder and it's associate conspiracies-presented in staggering detail, while the other is a psychological Greek-styled high drama of a hugely important personality, flawed and potent, crumbling and explosive.
Anthony Hopkins disappears into the role, and as these things usually do, a great actor and a great part/material make the best of art. Hopkins makes ... Read More

VHS : Hiding Out
Andrew Morenski (Jon Cryer) is a Wall Street broker in his prime living the good life and making the nice money. That is until the FBI wants him to testify against a mob figure regarding a bogus financial deal. It seems okay until hit men enter the picture and the government protection lets him down. Plan B though finds him hiding out in suburbia with his aunt and cousin and eventually leads him to hiding out back in his cousin's high school of all places. That can't be all bad right?

Wrong. Now it's time for the best laid plans to go right out the window in the funniest ways ever. Maxwell Hauser (nothing like getting your alias from a coffee can) becomes the oldest student ever in high school and he just can't get a break. For someone who's trying to keep a low profile, Maxwell turns out to be an ... Read More

VHS : Beautiful Girls
Beautiful Girls is an ensemble comedy, with star power to burn. Hutton and Sorvino are both Oscar winners, while Dillon Thurman, and Portman have Oscar nominations. The title of this movie, Beautiful Girls, should clue you in to what it's about. It is a celebration of the beauty of women, but at the same time, it is also a cautionary tale about how men put Beauty on a pedestal that sometimes interferes with them making a commitment to a mature adult relationship with a real woman. In spite of the stellar cast and lofty premise, it probably went straight to DVD. I have no recollection of this movie being released theatrically. I thought that because of this it would be a big stinker, but it was actually quite good. I have a few theories about why it performed so poorly at the box office:

It had a rather diffuse ... Read More

VHS : Steel (1997)
This was a solid movie. Too much garbage comes out today that is "critically acclaimed." With $16 million they did a nice job with the sets, filming of action sequences, and special effects to make this movie far more than watchable. A little chessey but very entertaining. There are solid moral lessons that are taught here that the youth of today need to see, understand, and embrace. Shaq's acting, contrary to popular opinion, is pretty good. Very easy to root for STEEL. A man's man. Kids, especially black kids, need to see strong black men take control of thier lives and make a positive and lasting impact on their families and their communities. Most of the people who reviewed this movie here on Amazon.com proabably just don't care about that. Buy it or rent it. It's nice to own a movie that has has a true Good Guy/HERO ... Read More

Don't buy Shag on DVD. You will be very disappointed. Buy it on VHS because that is the original one. The person that remastered it to DVD did a lousy job by replacing the original songs with horrible ones that I never heard of. It made the movie uninteresting.

VHS : Double Jeopardy (1999)
Life is good for Libby Parsons (Ashley Judd)--until she wakes up on a boat, covered in blood and finds herself in prison for the murder of her husband, though his body's never found. She gives custody of their son to her best friend.

Then the friend stops bringing her son to visit, and Libby finally tracks her down on the phone...and hears her son saying "daddy." Of course, nobody will listen to her claims, so she takes the advice of a (literal) jailhouse lawyer who tells her about double jeopardy--the guarantee in the Constitution that you cannot be tried for the same crime twice. Libby does her time, gets out on parole, and sets about looking for the man who set her up. She's thwarted and later abetted by Travis Lehman, her parole officer (Tommy Lee Jones).

It doesn't work this way in real life--even if someone ... Read More
