VHS : Soldier of Fortune (1955)
This is one of the most beautiful movies I've seen in terms of cinematography. Hong Kong was colorful and facinating, a world that doesn't exist 60 years later. I would gladly trade my old VHS for a fresh remastered DVD. The plot has been covered several times so I'd just like to mention a few individual scenes that stand out. Susan and Clark standing on the balcony with the wind whipping at them watching the typhoon blow in across the harbor. The old bartender and aging harlot marrying in the bar because "its not good to be alone when you're old" Hundreds of sampans sailing to the rescue like the US Cavalry. And of course I did mention Clark and Susan?

Anna Sten was a foreign imported from Samuel Goldwyn to be another Greta Garbo. She didn't make it and was later refereed to as Goldwyn's Folly.
But looking back on in this film before that period it shows an actress with talent. Actually the other actors in this film are good too. This movie is about a working girl Sten. She meets a poor student on the street and takes to him even giving him shelter in a room she doesn't use. But her employers who own the building aren't happy. One cheats her out of her earnings by giving her a lottery ticket which happens to win. Then chaos erupts as the poor student doesn't want her to think he's after her money and the creepy employer fakes love.
This is a comedy with several quirky moments, the kind of light hearted magic the silents produced.

VHS : So Ends Our Night
This is an unjustly neglected work: complex, subtle, and harrowing in its treatment of one of the major tragedies of the 20th Century: the rise of Nazi Germany and the persecution of that murderous regime of jews and of course, any opponents.
One of the more striking features of the film is that it was released in 1941, well before the full horror of the Nazi concentration camps was made known to the world, and yet "So Ends our Night" eerily captures the totalitarian abomination taking over Europe at the time.
The film, directed by John Cromwell, is based on the novel "Floatsam" by Erich Maria Remarque, the author of "All Quiet on the Western Front" and whose books were burned and banned by the Nazi regime. Having to flee Germany himself to escape certain death, Remarque was more than ... Read More

VHS : We Live Again
This remarkable film directed by Rouben Mamoulian and starring the vastly underrated Anna Sten and the stellar Frederick March, is based upon Leo Tolstoy's unforgettable novel, Resurrection. The themes in this story revolve around the struggles that have plagued but ultimately elevated humanity since the beginning of time: how we may self-justify our own errors, blind spots and prejudices; the ability to self-reflect, modify our behavior, and hold ourselves accountable for our actions; to experience the transformative effects of remorse, apology and redemption; and the conditions under which we forgive. Of special note are the scenes illustrating the Russian Orthodox Easter liturgy, which are aesthetically, culturally, and spritually transporting. This 1934 film is beautiful to look at, elegant, commanding the audience to pay attention to its star and its first-class look and sound. . Why this was portrayed for decades as a notorious flop is a mystery, Anna Sten is beautiful and distinctive, and the story, however sweetened from Zola's novel, compelling. Visually stunning, first-class Goldwyn people at work. Directed by Dorothy Arzner, now being re-evaluated and honored.

There is even an excellent Rodgers and Hart song written for it, which Anna Sten sings in the Dietrich style, yet with her own unique quality.
