Anna Moffo is superb. The filming is excellent. However I prefer a production of a live performance on stage.

VHS : Lucia di Lammermoor
When this film began, I thought I was going to love it because the cinematography of landscape and castles added so much to the overture. The baritone sang next, and he was quite good. Then came Anna Moffo, looking positively anorexic, her good looks practically a thing of the past due to, I presume, excessive dieting. Worse, she struggled with her high notes, and her high D's and E-flat were little short of strained screams--very unpleasant to listen to. What a pity this film was not made 10 years earlier! Moffo was only 39 here, but her high notes told differently.
The tenor, though quite good looking, was merely adequate.
Several large cuts were made in the opera, the biggest being cutting the entire scene of Lucia with the chaplain. This was a pity because the chaplain ... Read More

This Is a Classic, Layered Soap Opera Adventure. It takes place over a Generation In a Fictional Country In South America. All of It's principal characters are quite striking In their Beauty. All Necessary for a Soap Opera to Proceed.
What I find Interesting Is that the Story evolves like so many of the Dictatorships In South America.
You have a Brutal Dictator, giving No Quarter to his Citizens, and then Resistance Develops to the Abuse, and You have Leftist type Rebels Intending to Overthrow said Regime and take Power to Improve Peoples Lives..........All In The NAME of The PEOPLE............
The New Victorious Regime then Evolves Into the Same Form of Governmental Rule that they Just Removed. ex: CUBA........
What Goes Around In all of these Oppressed Backward Countries, Always ... Read More

VHS : Great Moments in Opera: Treasures From Ed Sullivan
For those who remember "The Ed Sullivan Show" for The Beatles, Senor Wences, and Topo Gigio, this collection of operatic highlights serves as a reminder that high culture was also a part of the mix each week on Sunday night's broadcast. Sullivan presented not only rock stars and grand opera but classical ballet, dramatic recitations, and dancing bears between 1948 and 1971 on CBS.

On this videotape you will find 26 performances featuring a dozen notable operatic voices and some names that should be instantly recognizable. The focus is indeed on the voices. When Richard Tucker appears in full costume to do "Vesti la giubba" from "I Pagliaacci," that is the exception and not the rule. Yes, it would have been great if there could be more segments like "Un bel di" from "Madame Butterfly," which Dorothy ... Read More

VHS : In Opera & Song
This video comprises three separate performances. In her first performance she sings Musetta's 'Quando m'en vo.' Moffo does a marvelous job. You can see how she got her reputation as a singing actress. She also sings 'Un bel di' during this first program. It's interesting to see Miss Moffo before her nose job. Her nose job transforms her from a merely pretty, young woman to "one of the ten most beautiful women in Italy."

During the second show she sings 'Stridono Lassu' and 'Love is where you find it." Her coloratura is free and unforced.

Her rendition of the Jewel Song at the Waldorf Astoria has a spectacular finish. The high note emerges free and focussed like a laser beam. It's also wonderful to hear her sing, "It's a grand night for singing." It takes a truly great opera singer ... Read More
