VHS : The Best of the Dean Martin Variety Show - Special Edition
Okay, first of all, I just would like to offer a bit of encouragement to all of those from the so-called 'greatest generation'. Please STOP STOP STOP gushing about the 'good old days' & a 'simpler time' & 'how comedy was so clean', WILL YOU? Do you have any freaking idea how all the later generations read all of this? Well, in case you don't, I'll tell you. We just shake our heads, roll our eyes, and ask the obvious question: where is the review? The whole idea here is to REVIEW, people! That means BE SPECIFIC, already! GEEZ! Get with the picture, will you? Okay, I'm done! Now, with that out of the way, here's my review.
First of all, I'm posting this review as a complete overview of these 'Best of Dean Martin...' videos. I'm not critiquing any specific one. Why, you may ask? ... Read More

I wish they'd do this one on DVD, because MArty takes the classic Legion Etrangre film (Gary Cooper 1939) and trashes it the way Mel Brooks did "Blazing Saddles" on the Western Genre..... Marty Feldman is a fogotten comic in the vein of Laurel and Hardy or Buster Keaton... When he plays second fiddle.... you laugh a lot!!!!!! DO IT IN DVD......PLEASE!!!

This is a western/comedy as good as Blazing Saddles or Maverick. And oddly enough, it has Arnold in it?! But don't expect his favorite catch phrase "I'll be back". This is much older than Terminator.

Most everyone is familiar with this movie so I don't have much in the way of comment except to say that it is a fun bit of Elvis fluff. The remastered and restored blu-ray transfer is outstanding. This, with a widescreed, HD TV very nearly duplicates the theater going experience.

VHS : The 10th Kingdom (Extended Play Version)
I'd read the book The 10th Kingdom a long time ago and just loved it. It was a great fantasy book -- one that I'd recommend for anyone into this type of genre.

I bought this DVD set about a week ago, thinking it too would become a favorite of mine (based on all the good reviews here on Amazon as well as a stellar review from a friend of mine). I have to say, though, that I was supremely disappointed by the quality of this film! Most of the acting was embarrassingly bad and the script wasn't that good, either. (The costumes and the sets, though, weren't bad--nor were the effects.) It's too bad, 'cause I think that this DVD series really could have been something fantastic.... ah well.

A pretty good version of a rather stodgey old musical. There's no way it can seem fresh, but as a museum piece this version isn't bad thanks to Ann Margaret and Bobby Darin. This was an ideal role for Darin - who likely would have done some broadway musicals thanks to his talents as a singer, dancer, and actor (a classic triple threat) - if his damaged heart hadn't precluded such strenuous roles.

He's at his punky best as the ambitious guy on the make, and delivers the best number of the movie in This Isn't Heaven, a song written especially for the movie. I wish he'd been cast in more musicals to utilize his wide range of talents, but it's great to see him here. Esp in the same movie with Ann Margaret, another triple threat.
