You don't get many opportunities to see Ethel Merman sing in films unfortunately, but this one has her in a couple of wonderful numbers, starting off with the outstanding Earful of Music which she does in a department store where she's selling sheet music. One outstanding song follows another. Eddie Cantor is magnificent. The Nicholas Brothers appear very early in their careers & are amazing in their gymnastic grace & invention. George Murphy & Ann Sothern join Cantor, Merman & the Nicholases in the rousing Mandy production where if you look real quick you'll see a young Lucille Ball in the chorus.

This movie definitely deserves to be available on DVD. MY Laser disk version is wearing out!

VHS : Best Man (1964)
"It did Adlai Stevenson great harm not having a wife and trying to be funny all at the same time".So declares a delegate at a party convention and it seems equally apt of its author Gore Vidal whose political hopes were shattered by a mixture of his sexuality and a patrician ironicism (twin and insuperable barriers to political advancement in Amaerica then -and maybe still)
The Best Man sees Vidal adapting his own witty play about personal and political morality ,the plot of which unfolds in a party convention seeking to nominate a candidiate for the Presidency. There are two main candidates .One is the intellectual ,Liberal figure of William Russell ,played by Henry Fonda and clearly based on the aforementioned Adlai Stevenson .His chief rival is the younger ,reactionary and unscrupulous ... I'm a big Ann Sothern fan, but she is awfully bland in "Lady Be Good." She's stuck with a sub-par screenplay and very little to work with. For real laughs, watch her in any of her Maisie movies (sadly not available on DVD). Why Arthur Freed produced this dreck is anybody's guess. Robert Young -- who co-starred with Sothern in "Maisie" -- looks uncomfortable throughout. Not all MGM musicals are classics, alas.

For Hollywood a fairly decent biopic at least better than Night and Day treatment of Cole Porter. It has the great Rodgers and Hart tunes - at least some of them and if they couldn't deal with Laurenz Hart I'm not sure they'd be ready even today. The acting was good the songs terrific, I'd reccomend for any lover of Richard Rodgers musicals.

VHS : Brother Orchid
Edward G. Robinson is somewhat cast against type in this film. It has been years since I have seen this movie; it's never been one that has received much exposure via television. It's a real treat to see Robinson take a turn at comedy; something he didn't do often but he had the skills to do it. Brother Orchid was released in 1940 & was directed by Lloyd Bacon. It's presented in the full screen format (1.33:1) & is in black & white.

Little John Sarto (Edward G. Robinson) has had enough of the rackets after someone in his Protection Agency has knocked someone off. He decides to retire, go to Europe & get some real class. After five years & broke (he's made some incredibly bad investments), he decides to return to New York City & become the head of his Protection Agency ... Read More

Only one of the reviews for this film belongs here. The video box picture shown above of a man walking carrying a gun and a briefcase is a totally different movie with the same title. This film does not feature Ann Sothern,John Savage or Cindy Williams and was not directed by Curtis Harrington. The movie for the picture shown is a British film from The 2000s not the American-made drive-in classic from The '70s about a serial killer that features a young, scantily clad Cindy Williams.Buyer beware!

VHS : Letter to Three Wives
I purchased this movie for my father who recalled to me that he had tried to find this movie here in Australia. I found it here on Amazon and purchased it for him. I watched this movie with some hesitation as I am not familiar with old black and white movies. This movie from 1949 kept my attention throughout with it's slick photography, direction, and plot. I was impressed with the cast and the acting. I would heartily recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys a well scripted and acted movie. The remastering to DVD was excellent even on playback to high definition screen. Five stars from me. (Daniel Hume)

VHS : That's Entertainment 2
THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT PART 2 is not quiet the caliber of the first film in the series, but it still has a great deal to offer. Like the first film, it has all sorts of great clips from MGM musicals. For musical lovers makes this film intriguing is that unlike the first film it's not a collection of the best known scenes, but secondary scenes that are treasured by audiences. For example, the Fred Astyaire/Cyd Charisse number in THE BAND WAGON is in the first film but ask anyone who loves this film what one of the best scenes would be, it would bee the "Triplets" scene which part two includes. Ann Miller's dancing among the musical instruments in SMALL TOWN GIRL makes the first film but the effervescent scene where Bobby Vann believes he's headed to stardom and hops his way through the town makes part two and if you're a fan of the ... VHS : Panama Hattie
Ethel Merman was the Broadway Hattie, and her powerhouse personality and laser singing would have helped this lackluster MGM offering. As it is, Ann Sothern is just too low-energy as the dame with the Panama nightclub who loves the blueblood soldier(Dan Dailey). Way too much screen time is devoted to the clowning of Red Skelton, Rags Ragland, and Ben Blue as spy-chasing sailors (although not even the Marx Brothers could have saved that part of the movie). Jackie Horner plays Dailey's daughter with sugar and no spice; Virginia O'Brien is on hand for her fans, and she does as well with "Did I Get Stinkin' at the Savoy" as could be expected. The specialty black numbers -- Lena Horne singing a definitive "Just One of Those Things", and the Nicholas Brothers doing their usual breathtaking routines -- are segmented off from the rest of ...
