VHS : You Can't Take It With You (1938)
This 1938 film was a big hit in the years of the Great Depression. It is terribly dated and unfunny today, given a changed culture. It begins on Wall Street when Mr. Kirby arrives at the building that has his name on it. Kirby & Co. will have the biggest monopoly on war munitions after he has bought all the property surrounding a competitor's factory. An early mechanical calculator is shown. The Vanderhoff family do their own thing at their large home. [This must be attractive to the unemployed of that day.] We meet each of them and their personality. [Only in Hollywood?] The culture of that time provides the background. "Hello, Mother." Could the son of a millionaire marry his secretary? Does this drama seem dated?

The neighbors are afraid of being forced out as someone is ... Read More

VHS : Witch Hunt (1994)
I have been waiting for years for this movie to make it to dvd.To say that this movie is quirky is an understatement.
It follows a detective played beautifully by Dennis Hopper as he tries to solve a murder. What is unusual is
that the average Joe uses magic as part of his daily routine,i.e.want to take out your trash, simply think it
and its done or want to be beautiful have someone cast
a spell and its done.
Hopper vehemently refuses to use magic eventhough he knows how.We get to follow him as meets a cast of quirky characters who use magic and try to help him solve the
murder.
Its just a fun movie.

VHS : Year of the Comet
This movie has gotten some unnecessarily bad press. It's basically a Cinderella story with wine. The performances are excellent and the Louis Jourdan subplot is clever. This is a straightforward romantic comedy with some international adventure elements. The script is by the great William Goldman. I've seen it again and again. It's sweet and endearing and the wine information is accurate. Check it out. You have nothing to lose and you probably have a wine-loving friend or two who will find it fun.

VHS : Awakenings
If ever I feel like I need a good cry (my wife is always saying I am such a girl, but I appreciate the need for emotional release) then this is one of the four or five films I readily reach for (the others being `The Elephant Man', `Million Dollar Baby', `Of Mice and Men' and the mediocre yet emotionally draining `I Am Sam'). If Ron Howard is the king of schmaltz then Penny Marshall is the queen, for she understands, like Howard, how to create a heavy-handed manipulative film feel natural and inviting. This film slides down smooth as can be, despite the fact that each and every frame is designed to antagonize our emotions.

`Awakenings' is based on the book written by neurologist Oliver Sacks. The book is based on the true story of neurologist Malcolm Sayer who discovers that a drug called L-Dopa ... Read More
