VHS : Student Prince (1954)
I was dragged to this movie as a young boy. What young man wants to see a movie with a singing prince and a love story? It didn't take long for me to enjoy the story of male bonding by singing and drinking in the beer garden soon to be followed by a sword fight.
I can almost imagine myself serenading the beautiful and sexy barmaid (Ann Bylthe), especially with the flawless voice from GOD(Mario Lanza) lip-synced to near perfection by the prince(Edmund Purdom).
All this plus an arrogant jerk is shown the error of his ways. Oh yeah, and the love story is classic.
With 20-20 hindsight it's obvious that losing Lanza, the actor, was a stroke of luck.

VHS : Great Caruso
This is a highly fictionaliased and heavily sentimental portrait of the great operatic tenor .It is lavishly mounted and has many popular ingredients which all helped in making it a major commercial hit in its day.

There is the rags to riches nature of the story as Enrico Caruso rises from poverty on the back streets of Naples to becoming the darling of New York society ,overcoming the death of his mother while still a child and building a carrer in the opera houses of Europe before his US debut. There is the theme of his falling in love with a scion of New York society ,in the face of unbending parental disapproval .There are lots of popular operatic arias and a strong dose of religiosity ,with the Bach -Gounoud "Ave Marie" a particular standout ..for those with more populist taste there ... VHS : Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid
I watched this as a kid and still have fond memories of it.
I would love to have it on DVD.
I am a huge mermaid fan and I think this movie inspired it.
There is debate whether or not he imagined her or not.
I think in this movie she was real and he did experience all those things that happened.
The end where he gave his wife a hairpiece that belonged to the mermaid.
That tore me apart.
He was in love with the mermaid and yet felt the need to be " in love" with his wife.
He had to make a choice whether or not to stay with someone he fell in love with , someone that made him feel young, wanted, and loved.
Or to honor his marriage vows.
And build on his marriage again.
No other mermaid movie has ever captured the emotion or magic for me.

VHS : Mr. Peabody and the Mermaid
I am not saying that I am fifty or anything like that, but I can relate to this movie. It makes you want to take up fishing. And William Powell portrays Mr. Peabody as well if not better than he does Nick Charles. Ann Blyth as Lenore the Mermaid does not have much to say but you understand her very well. This was filmed on location at Weekiwachee Spring, Florida. I have watched this so many times that I do not have to look up any more, even though I do. I also like all the scenes in the Psychiatrist's office.

Mr. Peabody is turning fifty. Everyone seems to remind him of this. On a vacation he captures a mermaid. So he says. However everyone else decides it is the "fifty" thing except the psychiatrist that wants to know what test line he used when he snagged her.

Be sure to read the book also ... Read More

VHS : Mildred Pierce
This film is a gem from the Hollywood era. Joan Crawford delivers a terrific performance as Mildred Pierce, a middle-aged women desperately trying to provide for her daughters as her marriage collapses. Told mostly in flashbacks, the film opens with a man being shot in a fancy Southern California beach house. The police pick-up Mildred and start questioning her, since it's her 2nd husband who is dead. Mildred recounts the ups and downs or her life and her inexplicable drive to win-over the love of her children, especially her spoiled, demanding eldest daughter named Veda.

The acting in Mildred Pierce is incredible. Crawford hits all the right notes as the workaholic mother with poor taste in men but a golden touch for running a business. She's almost overshadowed by Ann Blyth as the pampered, obnoxious teenage ... Read More

VHS : Our Very Own
Gail Macaulay (Ann Blyth) has it all. She's beautiful, she has a loving family, a faithful boyfriend (Farley Granger), and is about to graduate from high school. She has her fair share of problems, like her ambitious little sister Joan (Joan Evans) who tries to horn in on her boyfriend. However, their mother (Jane Wyatt) seems to keep her in line pretty well, that is until Joan learns a family secret and blurts it out to Gail in an arguement. Gail was adopted. The news turns her life upside down and has her questioning her perfect life and pushing the people that love her away.

An interesting and unusual story, Our Very Own features all of the corniness of family dramas but with an edge. Unlike many films of the era, the story focuses mainly on a teenaged girl. There are scenes at school, a big birthday party that ... Read More

THE BIG STAR OF THIS MOVIE IS THE WONDERFUL SOUNDTRACK FEATURING GOGI GRANT I ADORE HER AND ALL HER MUSIC AND WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE HER IN CONCERT IN 2002. STILL BEAUTIFUL AND SINGING THOSE GREAT SONGS AT 78 IS A TRIBUTE TO THIS STAR. THIS MOVIE AND SOUNDTRACK HAVE ADDED MUCH JOY TO MY LIFE.
