VHS : The Dead
The tenor evoking the memory of Michael Furey (the dead) for the wife,as he sings during the dinner party, assumes a more significant role when heard in a film score, than when left to a reader's imagination. John Huston had the keen sense to find the best - Irish tenor Frank Patterson, who died in 2000. According to CD notes for a Patterson collection including this song, he was originally going to be hired merely as the voice, but was then cast to act and sing.

While I admire the acting and directing as noted by so many others, it's the power of Patterson's marvelously wistful singing, so clear and pure, that most illuminates what little plot there is,and lingers with me. Hearing the song as he sings it, allows me to enter the wife's mind and interpret how she lamented her long ... Read More

VHS : Lonesome Dove
Quite simply, Lonesome Dove (1989) is one of the best westerns of all time. Even the minor characters are multi-dimensional and fully developed. All of the acting is top notch. The direction is superb.

But, this story is really about the relationship of two men: Captain Woodward Call (Tommy Lee Jones) and Captain Augustus McRae (Robert Duvall), retired Texas Rangers. Call, the stoic, is the polar opposite of McRae, a fun-loving "philosopher." Their poignant farewell is one of the most touching you will ever see on film. (Duvall said this was his favorite role.)

I rank this film right up there with The Searchers (1956) starring John Wayne.

VHS : Barbie As Rapunzel (Clam)
My 6 year old daughter really likes this movie, a CGI animated film. At first I didn't pay much attention to it, but my husband and I just finished watching it with her and I realize now what a well-made and entertaining movie it is.

A story-within-a-story, with Barbie narrating to her little sister, Kelly, about a young, honest girl named Rapunzel. Rapunzel is essentially a prisoner to Gogol, who has "cared" for her since she was a baby. However, one day, fate has a hand in allowing Rapunzel to realize that Gogol lied about Rapunzel's parents being dead. She explores the village outside the castle walls where she has been imprisoned and discovers, literally, that there is a whole world of love waiting for her.

I feel it teaches a good message, too, that of forgiveness. Despite ... Read More

VHS : Ever After - A Cinderella Story
This is probably my all time favorite movie! I LOVE this movie. Though I was never really drawn to Drew Barrymore as an actress, she seems to show up in all the good movies. She's an amazing actress.

I have watched this movie so many times; I'm surprise it still works. I love it so much, that when it came out on DVD, even though I had it on VHS, I bought it. This is one of those movies that you'll want to watch over and over.

This movie has inspired me in so many ways, in my fictional Romance writing. It is everything and more, that I could possible expect in a Cinderella story.

VHS : Postman Always Rings Twice (1981)
I hated this film on first vewing because I was used to the John Garfield version and I felt the sex in this one was just too perverse, especially the scene immediately following the 'accident". The movie has really grown on me since then, though, and it has become one of my favorite "new" film noirs. As for the DVD being in full screen: it is indeed in full screen, but it is not cropped. Instead, the transfer shows information on the top and bottom which would have been masked off in the theater. You can see that this is so by looking closely at the trailer included on the disc. You can get the same framing as the trailer if you have a newer TV with an adjustable picture ratio (16x9 +1)

I didn't expect to find this so moving! I initially wanted to watch it for Reba McEntire. (I'm a fairly new Reba fan and I've been trying to watch and listen to everything of hers I can find.) Well, she is only in about 15 minutes of the movie, but the performances were all superb and I'm glad I bothered to watch the whole thing.

This was a great family film. Good slapstick, geik, and family humor. I haven't laughed this hard at good clean fun in a long time. Eddie Murphy and crew successfully make a film with a scenario that might seem overdone, but this was by far the funniest effort I've seen yet.
