VHS : Lord Jim
Joseph Conrad's novel is a classic and Richard Brooks made a first-rate film version, with a great cast headed by Peter O'Toole in the early years of his career. Filmed in Super Panavasion 70 on locations in South East Asia, the film looks breathtaking in this excellent DVD transfer that has been remastered in high definition. Jack Hawkins narrates as well as appears (sadly, after he had had operations for throat cancer so his rich voice has lost some of its magic) and just when you think the story is reaching a conclusion, James Mason turns up for another chapter. Bronislau Kaper's music score is one of the greats (also including lots of Asian gamelan instruments) and decades ago was a collector's item LP. This anamorphic transfer recreates the visual impact of the film's initial theatrical release ... Read More

I have seen this movie several times and purchased it to obtain the disc with extra features. The disc would not play due to something being on it that I was unable to remove. I would like to know if there is a way to obtain the extras disc without flaws.
Thank you.

Vampires & More! 20 Movie Pack
Dracula, prince of darkness was directed by Terence Fisher, who had guided Christopher Lee through his first performance as the blood-thirsty count. Yhis film was the first NOT to feature Dracula's nemesis Van Helsing(played by Peter Cushing). Instead vamoire-fighting expertise was supplied by Andrew Kier in the role of Father Shandor. Like Van Helsing, Shandor despises blind superstition, but recognizes the forces of evil and respects their power. Dracula, Prince of Darkness, is in many ways a different sort of film from Hammer's, Horror of Dracula. Rather than jumping right into the expected vampiric activities, this film, takes its time introducing and developing its new characters before the revival of Dracula. Along with Shandor, the film's featured characters are two vacationing ... Read More

This is an astonishingly bad transfer to DVD for a film that I don't believe is in the public domain -- it's very tough to get through. It's a pity, as this is still an intriguing take on religion and imperialism. Shaw's performance as Pizzaro is both commanding yet convincingly conveys his credulousness in his new surroundings. Plummer as the Incan ruler with his petulant keening is more of a distraction. He sounds like Olivier and looks like Cher.
If this were ever restored, I'd give it another go.

A good video to understand the history of the Roman Empire. This video was instrumental in helping my child understand the history of what happened during this era.

Having recently returned from London I wanted to better understand some of English history. These movies are well done. I appreciate they are paired together like prequel and sequel. There is enough treachery in every day life without compounding it to the millionth degree by being born into a royal family.

VHS : The Night Visitor
Filmed in Scandinavia, Max Von Sydow, Per Oscarsson, and Liv Ullman are first rate in this psychological thriller.

During this time The Emigrants, Scenes from a Marriage, The New Land and other Nordic pictures took center stage above the Night Visitor. Although the aforementioned 3 occupy the absolute elite of all-time Nordic cinema, The Night Visitor is well worth watching and an interesting departure from stereotypical Scandinavian pictures.

The ending of this movie is great. Watch until the end.
