VHS : Skin Game
In the mid-70's James Garner & Louis Gossett teamed up in two memorable episodes of "The Rockford Files". Before that, however, they starred in "The Skin Game" with Susan Clark (best known as the mother on the t.v. show "Webster"). The Skin game is a smart comedy which also functions as an effective critique of the institution of slavery. All three stars are appealing and Garner does what he did best in "Maverick" and Rockford -- the con game. The con here is simple but enjoyable. The movie includes good performances by several familiar character actors of the era and features Ed Asner as the slave-trading bad guy. Due to "political correctness" I don't know if this movie could get made today, which is a shame. Highly recommended!

VHS : The Homecoming
This is simply a wonderful production that will fill you with warmth every Christmas.

The actors are all first rate, with Patricia Neal, Richard Thomas, the late great Cleavon Little, and William Windom doing a phenomenal job.

I know it sounds cliche,' but they just don't make 'em like this anymore.

I watch this right around the 22nd or 23rd every year with a fire going and it never fails to move me.

Get this while it is still in active print...it is simply a wonderful film that you and your family will treasure forever.

VHS : Return to Salem's Lot
If your a fan of 80's B-Movies like myself, this one is a must-have in your collection. While this doesn't compare to the original Salem's Lot, there is still entertaining humor to be had in this one. Most will rate this film terrible, but as the title of my review goes, it's only for the campy B-Movie collector only. too bad it's not officially on DVD....

It sure would be nice if this movie were to become available on DVD or
Blu-Ray it it's original theatrical widescreen release. Remastered
sound and picture, if necessary, would be great, too. This is one of
Paul Newman's best films. Looking forward to the day.

As a hillbilly, I'm not offended by that term. I am offended by this movie, though. This collective group of hill people make the Beverly Hillbillies look like Albert Einsteins.

The production values and writing are poor. The plot is predictable and cheesey. Don't waste your time. Just turn on the Hallmark channel and watch a couple of episodes of Little House instead. They won't be quite as ridiculous, but they'll hit ya in the same place.

6.Seven Days in May (B&W) starring: Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Fredric March, Ava Gardner, Edmond O'Brien

VHS : Seven Days in May (B&W)
Some of the best actors in Hollywood are in this film, but the best performance, as far as I am concerned is by Burt Lancaster. When I read this book and saw the movie as a teenager, it scared me to death to think how easy it would have been to topple our government. I would highly recommend this movie for any age range, with the caveat that reading the book first would enhance the experience.

VHS : It's Alive
In "celebration" of the Halloween spirit, my wife and I watched a couple of old horror flicks in recent days. As a lark, one of our selections was Larry Cohen's IT'S ALIVE. I had not seen the film in about 20 years, and I knew perfectly well it was not exactly a class act. But I was looking for modest, guilty-pleasure diversion.

It was a diversion, but not altogether a pleasure. Made in 1973/74, it absolutely REEKS of the sensibilities of that fashion-challenged time. Everyone smokes...everywhere. Bosses still played "grab a**" with their secretaries. Fabrics, carpets, cars and curtains were all shades of brown ("earth tones"). Everyone drank hard liquor. If the TV series MAD MEN slavishly recreates the feel of the early `60s...IT'S ALIVE actually gives a somewhat convincing idea of what the ... Read More

VHS : Merrill's Marauders
As a young Air Force corpsman stationed at Clark airbase during the filming of Merrill's Marauders, I had the opportunity to be on the set several times as the "resident" medical person in case of an accident or injury and had a short scene in the film with Andy Dugan that ended up on the cutting room floor. I met all the stars and had a ball. Besides, I got paid $20 per day and they served a great box lunch. One of the blogs I have read says that the extras were members of the Army Special Forces. That is not true, they were air force folks. Another blog states that Jeff injured his back while making the movie. That, too, is incorrect. He came to the Philippines with a serious back injury. It was exacerbated by the extreme work he did on the film. I worked in the orthopedic ward at the time of the filming and he slept on a hard ... Read More

VHS : Palm Springs Weekend
This was the first movie I saw when I was a kid. I was almost seven at
the time and it was on a double bill with "The Sword and The Stone." My
mum dropped my two sisters and myself off at the Altantic Theater in
Long Beach, California and this movie played first. I can't tell you a
thing about the Disney movie, but I remember just about every scene
from Palm Springs Weekend. The '63 Thunderbird, Bugs Bunny, Stephanie
Powers, Connie Stevens, the pool with the bubbles and the car chase at
the end. Hard to believe, but this film made me want to work in the
movies.

And so I did. I have worked in film and video most of my career and I
always tell people this was the film that first gave me the notion.

During my career I have been fortunate to meet two of the ... Read More
