Saw it at a tender age upon release. It left me shattered and I loved it. Snuggle with a sympathetic partner for this one.

Two emotionally wounded people find love through a dominant/submissive relationship. Maggie Gyllenhahl is great, as usual. Warning: although the domination scenes aren't that heavy, some people could find them offensive. But I'm not into BDSM myself and still liked the movie a lot.

The book was one of the most funny I've read, and the film just didn't do it justice. One improvement is that Sonny's character is much sweeter and more likeable in the film than in the book, but the finer points of the story have been lost. The part about the beard, for example, which wasn't just very touching, and funny, but incredibly shocking to someone born in 1964 and had never known a time when beards were downright subversive! All the actors were excellent--but more of the book could have been written into the film.
Also, to a previous reviewer, the time frame of the story is in the early '50's--they were NOT returning from the Vietnam War! The Korean War was in the early '50's; the Vietnam War didn't begin till 1964!

VHS : Prefontaine
A longtime runner, myself, who'd forgotten about this rising star in the runner's world, can testify to "Prefontaine" being the best athlete bio-pic of recent memory that surprises, informs and inspires in the best sense of the word. You'll lace up the running shoes after this film. The script was generous to all the supporting people who nurture greatness in the form of Steve Prefontaine. Special mention should go to the casting and artistic control of this looking back upon the start of the jogging era. Jared Leto plays Prefontaine like a glove, at first running on brashness to finish on unselfish awareness. Certainly, there are parallels to James Dean here, but when actual Munich footage enters effectively, Leto's portrayal ascends with the laurels Prefontaine earned. Next to "Jim Thorpe--All Merican" in ... Read More

Okay, folks, please indulge me....if I provide the right context, you might thoroughly understand why the title of this review is oh, so apropos!!

...okay, so it was a crisp, foggy, rainy, windy San Francisco Sunday morning....one of those mornings where you awoke, looked outa the window and immediately knew you would deservedly luxuriate in bed after a loooooooong week....this was the perfect time to catch up on some old movies I had been meaning to watch/may have missed....I had passed by Bram Stoker's The Mummy on guide listings, each time wondering, "why haven't I heard of this before?" all because the natural assumption was that it was somehow remotely connected to Bram Stoker's Dracula...at least in terms of production values.....nothing could be further from the truth...

....I should have ... Read More

VHS : End of Summer
End of summer is really the story of two peoples affection for each other, but the plot can stir up emotions in those of us who are over jealous, as the two people almost by misunderstanding, doesnt get each other. And (so it can seem) tries to make each other jealous by "adultry". The film also contains other emotional stiring situations, as young girl trying to commit suicide since they got pregnant with the priest etc, -excuse my english I havent slept in 22 hours.
