I have all of Barbra Streisand movies on Dvd except for this one. This is one of the biggest mysteries. It probably is Barbra's best film ever and it is still not out on Dvd. What are they waiting for? I wish someone knew the answer to this question.

It is not surprising that this film, a work based on Joseph Conrad's thought-provoking novella of the same name, has garnered a wide variety of opinions and perspectives- just from the Amazon reviews alone! People saying its terrible, people who love it, even those who would have it as "art" above a normal television film. Well, I thought I'd add my two cents to the views already expressed. So here goes... First off, one who did not know any better would never be able to guess that it was made for TV. I mean where (in the US anyway) do you see television movies that look like this, or have this kind of story. We're talking African rivers and jungles, madmen, ivory, and intense imagery here... and Nicolas Roeg seems to have been the perfect choice for so unusual a project. The atmosphere set ... Read More

For me one of the most engaging moments in the film is when Gilbert, played by Broadbent, encounters Japanese Kendo fighting and especially Japanese theater. This is set up as a prelude to suggesting that an exhibition of Japanese culture Gilbert attends starts him off thinking up the Mikado. Whatever the intentions Broadbent's reactions as the camera focuses on his reactions to the unfolding drama in the play demonstrate in a completely convincing way how a Victorian Londoner would react to a (Noh?) play. He utterly and with an exquisite degree of facial movement replicates a man who doesn't understand the drama he is watching, can barely relate to it, or can only respond to it as a Victorian might, but respects it. Broadbent's depiction of a Victorian popular artist thinking through the ... Read More

First off, as a Music Conservatory Grad I am well acquainted with the music of the mad and ill-fated Peter Warlock.
Secondly, this film is "based on a true story".It never claims that is IS the truth of what happened in the life of Philip Heseltine, a.k.a.Warlock.So "purists" will just have to get over it! This is a movie! This is a screenplay! These are actors!....and THIS IS ONE DARN GOOD FILM regardless.
Jeremy Northam has long been one of my favorite actors, but this role has given him some real "meat" to chew on as he slips in and out of the split-personalities of Heseltine and Warlock. This role has to be the single most great performance that Northam has ever put to screen. He is sweet, unassuming, deluded and vicious all together in one.
Research on the historical Heseltine/Warlock shows that ... Read More

I had been seeking this movie for quite some time. I had been told by several outlets that the movie was no longer available. I looked it up on Amazon.com and was able to find the product. It was purchased and received in a very timely manner. The movie was what I had expected and I could not be more satisfied.

I bought this for the music and information on the life of Cole Porter.
It was a good movie but didn't have as much music as I expected. It was
interesting to see a bit of a young John Barrowman.

An entertaining HBO film about the life of Marilyn Monroe. Lindsay Crouse has a good role as Marilyn's coach and is fine as usual. Good picture and sound.

The main character couldn't act and the script was so poor that I never really figured out what the plot was until the end. Gwendolyn was egotistical and selfish and then later- pathetic and needy. Daniel just wandered around lost the whole time. Mirah was a weak character...
This seemed to be a movie (at the end, anyway) about how terrible English society was when compared to the unfortunate Jews. It tries to be interesting and complex, but it fails miserably. At the end, I felt like I've been shammed into watching something that is just a thinly veiled attempt at convincing the viewer of the greatness and importance of Jews and their quest for a homeland. I don't care about any of that. If it had been about any other race/religion taking pride in themselves, while showing how crappy other people were, I still would have been annoyed. The problem ...
