VHS : Shirley Valentine
Shirley Valentine has enjoyed screen and stage success as the story of the ignored and unappreciated British housewife who finally has it up to here with her demanding husband and clueless daughter, secretly running off to Mykonos, one of the Greek Isles, for a change of emotional and attitudinal landscape. Once she ditches her self-absorbed female companion on the trip, Shirley settles into an unexpected romance with a cafe owner (Tom Conti) who reminds her just how lonely she's been. Her decision not to return to the U.K. and stay at the hotel cafe to serve guests puts her husband in crisis and a little self-examination of his own as he packs his bags and heads for the Greek Isles to fetch her. Pauline Collins is witty and charming and very funny as Shirley Valentine, especially as she succumbs ... Read More

This is magical work. It reeks of originality & excellence. British humor has its own reason for being. Michael Gambon is just flat superb! The original writer Potter is no longer with us - what a pity! It is a combo of suspense, wit, pathos all rolled into one. I did not see the movie with Robert Downey Jr. I could not bear to make a comparison to this gem of a production.

VHS : Selling Hitler (2pc)
A tawdry and twisted boardroom farce and journalistic spoof. Top notch performances throughout. Equal in caliber in every way to Robert Harris' book, which is a tremendous beach read with serious message. It's chilling to think that the history of Nazi Germany was almost re-written by a drunken gun-nut forger and his emotionally-unhinged dupe. Although very talky, it never drags. Pacing is carefully managed and a four-hour movie goes by quickly. Owing to the length, there is more than enough technical detail about business negotiations, document forensics, historical research, and tabloid journalism to satisfy any geek, but it's never overdone.

It also has willfully goofy moments that leaven a ghastly subject with highly-appropriate satirical humor.

i first saw this movie some 12 years ago on the TV, and Loved it ever since. this is one of the movies that I had recorded from the TV, then Bought it on VHS when I found it ... and the recently, after long term searching Acquired it on DVD (as VHS seiged to exist).
i don't really care much for the Critics and their grading of the movie. cuz when I look it up in any of the Movie Encyclopedias that's available, the review of the movie is not that great. but I have the right to disagree... admittedly, it may not fall in everybody's taste... but I can't stop laughing whenever I put it on.
The story or plot is as said ... One Big Mess of Mistaken Identity, 3 people comes to venice each with their own agenda, but due to a LINGUAL Barrier, they all get mistaken for one another and each of them, Unknowingly, gets the task ... Read More

VHS : Private Function
Much more reserved than a Monty Python film but Palin's humor is excellently dry in this unique film about a strained married couple during post war WW II England that was stil experiencing shortages, particularly meat. Palin plays a podiatrist married to Maggie Smith, who obviously and reluctantly settled for him as opposed to a more, in her mind, prestigious physician or other socially upward chap. As post war England is still in the midst of a severe meat shortage, requiring rationing, those with meat are much higher up the social ladder and become the "in crowd". And on the flip side, those who suddenly possess meat, whether through legal means or otherwise, can procure money, sex or other special favors. Palin playing the severely reprimanded husband can never seem to please his wife, or have the benefits of any affection what ... Read More

Ok, I love John Cleese. This movie is a great sleeper starring the master. There is less physical comedy and more subtle comedy in this film, and I like that. It will never be listed among his master works I'm sure, but a great and cute little film. If you like Cleese, this belongs in your collection.
