VHS : The White Tower
So okay, we've all heard of the "forgotten cinematic treasures" that turn out to be a load of cockywocky, but this is the real thing.

The choice of title was unfortunate, but they didn't know that in 1950. "White Tower" is a Hollywood version of the "mountain film", a strange interwar German genre that served as a nursery for people like Leni Riefenstahl. In mountain films, a doomed climbing team composed of varied and conflicting types takes on an "unconquerable" peak, dying one by one on the way up until the only survivor reaches the top to undergo an ineffable mystical experience before freezing to death. (No wonder they lost the war.)

"White Tower" replaces the metaphysics with melodrama, and that's all to the good. The setting is the immediate postwar era, where a burnt-out GI ... Read More

VHS : Senso (Italian version w/ English Subtitles)
I have rated this film 4 only because of it's length, there are some ponderous moments, but otherwise it is a 5.

Italian cinema was still having growing pains from the war, but this epic succeeds, and skillfully incorporates the war torn landscape into this tale of an earlier war. The music score is very big and melodramatic, but fitting. The film opens with an opera in an enormous opera house, and this is fitting for the grand scale and operatic scope of this romance and the background. This is "Gone With the Wind" - Italian style - with a much more sympathetic heroine.

I am a fan of Alida Valli and have sought out her work. Perhaps because this is in her native Italian, and/or because of her Italian director, she is a full, vital, feminine woman in this film; very different from ... Read More

Yes. Absolutely. You're busted by this film (you know whom you are) and you STILL will not admit it. Classic.

The-Powers-That-Be (or think that they "Be", incorrectly, I must add) in Hollywood should produce this movie in English.

There is a DEMAND for it. It would sell. Yep.

Yet the hypocritical, "tell-us-what-we-should-think" and "tell-us-what-we-should-do" people in Hollywood will never produce this in English.

Oh, no, they will not, for they are long-time admirers of socialism/communism. Fidel and Hugo Chavez are their heroes. Long live an economic system--socialism/communism--that has failed so often in history!!

Thankfully, not all of the actors and actresses in Hollywood are communists that fall down and worship Fidel or kiss Hugo's ... Read More

VHS : The Castilian
This spanish-made "spectacle" was released a year after "El Cid" and takes a different look at the medieval Spanish wars between the Moors and the Christians. Whereas the Charlton Heston epic carried a message of unity for loyal Spaniards, whether Moorish or Christian, this movie is a flat out jingoistic anti-Moorish propaganda film. Both movies had large casts, huge battle scenes, a struggle of a hero to unite Spain, a romance, and are told in a style evoking tales told by medieval troubadors. "El Cid," however, has garnered both critical and popular accolades and is actually a damn fine movie, though its stylistic earnestness gets an occasional campy snicker. "The Castilian"'s stylistic earnestness fails to impress and the production values show a depressing cheapness for what was supposed to be such a big movie. ... Read More

Alida Valli made very few American films, and it is a loss to our history. This star known best for her work in "Miracle of the Bells" (the story of a brilliant actress who plays Joan of Arc, and then dies with that being her only film), is not just a striking beauty. Unlike many of the glamourous, beautiful stars of the 40s, she shares with us a complex and intelligent internal life. We know that we will only know 10% of what is going on in her head, but we see the wheels turning through her eyes. It is this quality which makes this film come alive, and it is a perfect vehicle for her.
Gregory Peck (although slightly miscast - not old enough yet to be a middle aged lawyer in mid-life crisis) with his open accessibility to the audience, and his emotional availability is the perfect foil for Valli. This ... Read More

VHS : 1900
The essential question (and complaint) I have with Bernardo Bertolucci's "1900" is, "Why is it more than 5 hours in length?". We suffer from too many characters, too many repetitive sequences, and too much gratuitous excess. I am not a proponant of grading everything by its' length but it is, in my opinion, a valid criteria of artistic acheivement. My favorite work of fiction ("The Cypresses Believe in God") is over 1000 pages long yet its' brillance was the way the author was able to personalize the labyrinth that was Spanish politics in the 1930's. Most accounts of the Spanish Civil War merely focus on the major political parties involved in the struggle. The complexity of the subject required a deeper explanation. On the other hand, my favorite TV show ("The Twilight Zone") "jumped the shark" when it expanded from 30 to 60 minutes. The show ... Read More
