It's been a while since I last saw this film and I remember liking it a lot! The DVD has gone out of print(OOP) and it's a shame that so many people will miss seeing this interesting and gritty film. Rourke gives a memorable perfomance in this tale of booze and should-a", "would-a","could a's". I would have to see it again before I could give it an honest rating, but it is certainly worth a new DVD release. "I could have beaten him if I had eaten a sandwich!" Please re-release this film on DVD!

VHS : In Old Chicago
After years of being only available in a cut 94-minute version, this Fox Classics DVD includes both that and the original roadshow version - with interesting results. In its uncut 110-minute roadshow version, In Old Chicago plays like an even more obvious ripoff of San Francisco, merely substituting Tyrone Power, Don Ameche, Alice Faye and the Chicago fire for Clark Gable, Spencer Tracey, Jeanette MacDonald and the San Francisco earthquake and adding more twee Oirish antics than are healthy. The musical numbers are a step down too, particularly Faye's rendition of Carry Me Back to Old Virginny complete with `massa' lyrics, and the finale isn't as grand on screen as it is in your memory: the scenes of the crowds of refugees on the banks tend to be far more effective than the backlot chaos. Still, any film ... Read More

And what a sister! Alice Faye and Betty Grable were made for each other as a musical comedy act, together or separately in given scenes. Alice, as the dominant sister, got most of the good single numbers, but Betty got a chance to show her stuff with "honeysuckle rose". I can't believe they were never again paired(although they were supposed to be, in "The Dolly Sisters" But, it was too late, as Alice decided to retire just then). John Payne and Jack Oakie were another great buddy pair, Oakie providing a perfect comedic balance to Payne's serious demeanor as a pair of struggling tunesmiths. Oakie does an impromptu rendition of a classic George M. Cohan war moral booster, composed about the time the story takes place, at the beginning of WWI. This duo would appear in several other Faye films, either separately ... Read More

Fanny Brice sued (and won big money) over the clear references to her own life, and Alice Faye is not the person to do justice to the song "My Man" (see Barbra Streisand in "Funny Girl" if you want real emotion) but this is still an engrossing film with Al Jolson performing some of his signature somgs.

Faye adds little to the role of a Ziegfeld star who marries poorly, but her likeability is all that is needed. Tyrone Power is all charm and attempts to add some substance to his role as a neer-do-well gambler. There's also Bill Frawley of I Love Lucy fame in a small role, but for me the film is an unequalled chance to see Al Jolson at his very best. Jolson avoids the over-acting of his earlier starring films (near the end of his film career, he accepted third billing here) but then no one watches Jolson in films ... Read More

If you feel silly watching Shirley Temple films without a child, watch this one. Jack Haley and the wonderful and sexy Alice Faye are superb. There's a dark aspect with one character stalking Shirley (rather unsettling). Everyone is terrific in the film and I believe it to be Shirley Temple's best movie. I agree with one reviewer about the cruel dispatching of the nurse Collins. It was either the result of clumsy writing or editing. Otherwise this is one enjoyable, bouncy film.

This is an excellent DVD. I particularly enjoyed the audio commentary by Ray Faiola, which is superb. The commentary is so full of valuable historical information and trivia. I have listened to many DVD audio commentaries, and they range in quality from very good to very bad. This audio commentary is, without a doubt, one of the best I have ever heard. Other distributors of DVD's should listen to this audio commentary as an example of how it should be done! There are other good extras on this DVD, including an A&E Biography on Alice Faye, three deleted musical numbers in pristine condition, and newsreel footage of the London premiere.

A word about the DVD transfer quality - I have noticed that some of the other reviewers on Amazon.com have carped about the picture quality, saying that it is supposedly "terrible". Trust me, this is not true! ... Read More

I always felt that 20th Century Fox put out the best story/music combination in the mid 1930s to early 1940s. There is a light hearted bounciness to the songs and these Fox musicals are, for me, much preferred to the overdone, sluggish MGM musicals. WB was great too but had that harsh urban twist to them which is by no means a knock to that studio. I love them. The 20th musicals, with Alice Faye, Don Ameche, Jack Haley, Betty Grable, Cesar Romero, John Payne, Jack Oakie, display in these performers, an infectious light-hearted quality. Too bad Dick Powell couldn't have been part of this group after 1935; he would have fit right in with his high likeability factor. Both of Dick Powell's loan outs to Fox, "On the Avenue," along with the forgotten but terrific "Thanks a Million," from 1935, are 2 of his very best films from this era. I hope this latter title comes ... Read More

A pretty good version of a rather stodgey old musical. There's no way it can seem fresh, but as a museum piece this version isn't bad thanks to Ann Margaret and Bobby Darin. This was an ideal role for Darin - who likely would have done some broadway musicals thanks to his talents as a singer, dancer, and actor (a classic triple threat) - if his damaged heart hadn't precluded such strenuous roles.

He's at his punky best as the ambitious guy on the make, and delivers the best number of the movie in This Isn't Heaven, a song written especially for the movie. I wish he'd been cast in more musicals to utilize his wide range of talents, but it's great to see him here. Esp in the same movie with Ann Margaret, another triple threat.

I'm not necessarily a fan of Shirley Temple but I love Alice Faye so I own this VHS. Alice made one other film with Shirley Temple (Poor Little Rich Girl) and I own that also. She sings 2 songs in this one: "Good Night, my Love" is the better. Very few of Alice Faye's 1930s films are available on VHS and DVD. If you don't know Alice Faye, I would recommend "Lillian Russell" or "Weekend in Havana" (both are on DVD). You can also buy CDs of her music (and wonderful voice).
