I've loved this gem of a comedy since I was a kid, and nothing else makes me feel better than dusting it off and watching it again with fresh eyes. Sharing the experience with friends seeing it for the first time is a particular joy, since many have never seen this wonderful comedy -- although they have heard the title. The talent of the actors and the sparkling script put this film head-and-shoulders above fantasy films of today.

A long way from the Hollywoodised version of a Lonesome Dove sequel seen in `Return from Lonesome Dove', this is Larry McMurty's riposte to the way the Studio handled that sequel. Where `Return..' dealt with the cattle barons and themes of redemption and wholesome endings, this is a stark and realistic portrayal of the West. Here, the violent men of the burgeoning West are a dying breed (no pun intended) and that sense of a time in history passing is present throughout the whole movie.
Captain Call is now a bounty hunter - past his best, failing eyesight and getting old, but still with his own inherent sense of what's right intact. The movie is a manhunt, for a young Mexican killer - a boy from a good family who was captured by the Apache and was bad ever since. For the trip, Call seeks ... Read More

VHS : Rhapsody in Blue
As a Hollywood biopic this is only average. Too much of the film is devoted to Gershwin's supposed romantic involvement with two women, who are both entirely fictional. Far more important in reality was his friendship with Oscar Levant, who was not only the composer's best friend but also after his death was widely recognized as the most authoritative interpreter of his major works for piano, Rhapsody in Blue and Concerto in F. Levant's presence in the film lends it some historical authenticity. Also present are Al Jolson, a legendary figure in the history of American popular entertainment and the interpreter of Gershwin's single most popular song, "Swanee", and Paul Whiteman, the bandleader who collaborated with Gershwin in the premiere of Rhapsody in Blue. (Fred Astaire is sorely missed.) There is also a superb ... Read More

So great to have this to add to our collection of solidly entertaining movies that we can watch many times and not get tired of. We're Ward Bond fans. He beefed-up and buffed-up for his role of John L. Sullivan, with all that swagger and commanding Irish pride he does so masterfully. A blustering,larger-than-life, unforgetable character.
Errol Flynn is top-drawer- seems just an extension of himself. Lively and polished as he plays an over-confidant charmer that gets a lot of lucky breaks but never seems to notice. His humility with the beaten Sullivan is the balance. Are those actually his dancing feet in the ring? This is only our second Flynn movie to own. We'll be looking for more.
The supporting characters really make the movie more fun and endearing- like Jack Carson and Alan Hale. Mr. Hale is a great characature ... Read More

VHS : Night & Day (1946)
It's clear from the beginning of this film that the star of Night and Day is the music of the man himself...Cole Porter. The song and dance sequences are beautifully done (the tap dancing number in particular was fantastic) and I even took pleasure in the story. Of course, since this film has been made, we now know much more about Cole Porter than is revealed in this film such as his being homosexual. However, I find that Night and Day better honors Porter and his love of his music first and foremost. It is a delightful and entertaining movie that truly sings Cole Porter's praises.

I bought this as David Janssen in it, and for that it was most definitely worth it. Story & some of the lines made me laugh more than a bit. Sure DJ had fun making it. I's very corny but really quite fun.Great for female David Janssen fans :)

Tried to care about this elegant, opulent saga, but this movie just comes off as rather pointless. Michelle Pfeiffer turns in a radiant performance trying to get out from under these overstuffed rooms and overwrought sensibilities, but can't quite manage it.

Her main problem, in my opinion, Daniel Day-Lewis here plainly just doesn't cut it as a leading man. His emasculated, simpering deadpan, dispensing dialogue medicinally as so much cough syrup, completely fails to engage as a romantic figure. Trying to imagine Michelle's ravishing, vivacious character head over heels for him is more than a stretch. I've seen gunfighters with more chemistry than these two. Their first intimate scene, eek! Comes off like an accident on a crowded bus. This mis-casting is quite annoying, as this movie appears in many ways to have had real promise. ... Read More
