VHS : Looking for Richard
I really enjoyed this film because it makes accessible one of the greatest written English stories to another generation on whom otherwise it would be lost. The Bard's play is a story written after the fact during the victorious Tudor era. Hence the creation of a dark hearted villain and his manipulative lust for power. Richard really was a brave king who died in battle at the head of his troops at Bosworth in 1485, the victorious Henry Tudor's family thus having the opportunity to enjoy Shakespeares re-write of history as they clung to power.
The villain is a true monster and has been the basis of many a similar character that Pacino himself has played in a more modern setting.

I studied the play at school and at first was baffled by the language. I persevered with it, ... Read More

VHS : Streetcar Named Desire (1995)
This lavish 1995 television remake of A STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE is simply sublime. Jessica Lange is perfect casting for the tour-de-force role of Blanche DuBois, and Tennessee Williams' play still packs a hell of a punch.

Blanche DuBois (Jessica Lange) goes to visit her sister Stella (Diane Lane) and her husband, boorish Stanley Kowalski (Alec Baldwin) one sultry summer in New Orleans. Blanche lives in a world of her own creation to protect herself from the frightening, black gaping void of a hostile real world from which she simply cannot survive. When Stanley discovers Blanche's weaknesses it's only a matter of time before she cracks completely.

Tennessee Williams' dramatic tale of the innocent and fragile being crushed by a hostile and cruel world is still amazingly relevant. ... Read More

My 2 1/2 year old son loves Thomas, so I was excited to buy him this DVD. However, this collection includes episodes about mudslides, floods, and something about being trapped in a mine. The first (and only) time he watched it, he kept running out of the room to hide in another room. What a disappointment. I don't know why the creators of shows for small children think they have to make things scary. What a waste.

VHS : Beetlejuice (P&S Slip)
This movie is a classic scare comedy! Perfect for Halloween!!! If you love Tim Burton, this is a must own (pre Winona Ryder shoplifting breakdown). It's cheesy, fun, and a movie I can watch over and over!!!

My son is 13 mos and LOVES this movie. Yes Peter Fonda's acting makes me laugh but the movie is golden simply for the fact that my son can watch it over and over again and keep him entertained. Anyone who thinks the plot is hard to follow is joking because my son at 13 mos follows it and even claps at the parts when Thomas saves the day. The songs are sweet and it's a nice feel good movie for the whole family. Alec Baldwin is a hilarious straight man to his free spirited cousin. They actually make the movie tolerable for the adults who have to sit through it.

I love this Thomas video! When I was little I got this video along with Trust Thomas(another good one). George Carlin does a good job narrating too. It's a shame this video is no longer avalible, it makes a few of the stories in Thomas&the special letter make no sence at all! I am 10 years old and I still watch it! The story stops are:Granpuff, sleeping beauty, A bad day for Sir Handel, Rusty helps Peter Sam, Rusty to the rescue, Thomas&Stephney, and the music video called Gone fishing. All in all, it was a very good addition to my collection of Thomas videos.

VHS : 10 Years of Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends - Best Friends
First of all, let me say that I love Thomas the Tank Engine. My 6-year-old son has loved Thomas for 3+ years running and I am very grateful for all the good times the three of us have had. That having been said, this is a compilation VHS. You will not find any new stories on this one. However, it is worth viewing (and getting, if you don't have a big collection) if you have children. We got this as a gift from friends, so having duplicates of the stories was not a big problem with us. Interspersed between the stories is what seems to be an advertisement for the "Day Out With Thomas." It is interesting to watch, but is not informative for one actually thinking about participating in one of the programs.

The 10 stories (4 more than the usual offering) featured on the video are as follows:

VHS : The Alamo - Thirteen Days To Glory
Yes, this has faults, many glaring. But it was created for the Texas Sesquicentennial celebration and was aired during the time of year of the battle (if I remember correctly). It was made to be entertaining and appeal to the young people (Alex Baldwin; the young lovers-the girl was played by a former Miss Texas, I think; the marvelous Raul Julia, who practically stole the show), who have to study Texas history twice before they graduate there. As a fifth-generation native Texan (currently exiled in Georgia) I love the Alamo story and its various conflicting legends, understanding that because of the veil of history and the way that Santa Ana tried to obliterate the battle site we may never know the entire truth of the matter. What we can know are certain specifics. The actors portraying Bowie and Crockett were too old for the roles (characters ... Read More
