Q: "What kind of people don't talk while they're eating?" A: "Married people." And other memorable quotable lines. Charming people I cared about even when one or the other was behaving like a jerk. And the Mancini music unites all the scenes throughout the years.

VHS : Murder on the Orient Express
Murder on the Orient Express is the first Christie novel I read, and I believe it is the best Christie novel ever... After reading almost all Poirot books and seeing all Hercule Poirot adaptations(starring David Suchet), I think Albert Finney had none of the characteristics of Poirot. He is not well dressed, he is not clever, he is not anything that Poirot was...I think Finney and the director should have read some of Christie novels.
For the movie, I should say that the cast is superb, scenes are very good for its time.
Overall; I am no movie critic, but there were few thing good about this movie and they were spoiled by Albert Finney...

VHS : Miller's Crossing
I had seen Fargo, and was prepped to have a good time with Miller's Crossing. I knew it was meant to be a takeoff on film noir, so I didn't expect great art. Just some fun.

Nope. Even with the stellar acting power of Gabriel Byrne and Albert Finney, this souffle falls flat. There is no -- as in NO -- plot to follow. All you see are guys dressed up like 30's mobsters, trying to talk tough and clever. But their lines aren't actually tough, and they certainly aren't clever.

Halfway in, I commented to my wife, "It's kind of hard to follow," to which she said, It's impossible. Nothing's happening." We popped the DVD out at that point, and put in another movie. Maybe if I'd stuck it through to the end, some little thing would have actually happened. But that's not the point of this kind of movie, is ... Read More

VHS : Nostromo
While not great, this movie certainly warrants a look before one tackles what is universally considered a difficult-to-read novel. At least you can get the basic contours of what's going on before wading into Conrad's stiff and tasking prose. This is a boon, certainly. Following the book more or less closely, as it does, it will clear a lot of otherwise murky things up for you.

As for the acting, there is a mixed bag here. The actors playing Charles Gould, Nostromo, and the Doctor, for example, all do a fine job. But their efforts are consistently scuttled by terrible acting on the part of certain others (two particular examples spring to mind: the horrendous actress who does Dona Antonia, and the elsewhere excellent Canadian actor who plays Decoud).

The BBC took a lot of trouble to make this, and it shows. ... Read More
