VHS : Uncle Tom's Cabin
This is a 90's film adaptation of Harriet Beecher Stowe's important novel by the same title. This story, and the message of the story, is of utmost significance. It is a tale in 1850's America of slave trading -- buying and selling people like they were property, and of cruel treatment that would be unacceptable for even zoo animals. Obviously, plantation life for the slaves could vary from reasonably comfortable to incredbly inhumane, depending mainly on the owner. The film story demonstrates this well.

There are glimpses of light: the strong Christian belief system and ethics among the slave population, and the good Samaritan acts and sacrifices of those who would aid them. But the general environment and theme is dark and the horror of the situation is self-evident.

I saw this movie a number of years ago and thought it was cute. When I found it on DVD I bought it thinking it would make a nice addition to my easy watching collection. I watched it and found it had a whole new meaning to me and wondered "Did they know what they wrote"? Very interesting point of view as well as fun to watch.

VHS : Song Without End
I was really impressed with all the reports I have read on Song Without End. I notice it is not being offered on DVD at present. But I did buy it on Video originally and when I saw I could get it on DVD; a while back I thought it might have improved in quality of sound.
Alas; the DVD has the same faults as the Video so obviously no technical re recording was attempted.
I am not very versed in the history of Lizst and his affairs and the ones with whom he had his affairs.
I mainly was disappointed at some of the technical flaws in the Movie BOTH on Video and then again on DVD.
While I realize the Movie was originally probably made on 35 mm for Cinema showing..I want other viewers to look at it again and see the number of places where the sound is quite poor.

This is a very powerful film. It's very personal to me, because many of the problems Travis has can be related to me in ways. They can be related to everyone in ways. The problems of loneliness. The film expresses it through Travis in a deep, dark, and disturbing way. We connect to the character in his downfall.

VHS : My First Mister
I was channel surfing and found this one. I was sucked in and am buying my own copy. Albert Brooks and John Goodman are 'lock' actors for good performances, but who really surprised me was Leelee Sobieski. She shows surprising range of emotion and ability for someone who is very hit-and-miss on film. Case Comparison: "Joan of Arc" vs. "The Messenger", produced pretty close together in time, in which she is outperformed by Milla Jovovich by an embarrassing margin. It is for this very reason that you should buy "My First Mister"; it is a "Monster"-like moment for Sobieski that really departs from her thin, blondie-mannequin archtype all too prevalent in many of her films. At least rent it; you won't be disappointed. Four stars only because of Carol Kane(over the top) and Michael McKean(surprisingly diluted) showing weak performances. The ... Read More
