VHS : Rasputin (1996)
This is a beautifully depicted film. Yes, it is based on fact, but I am sure than no movie can really accurately described what really went on in the lives of the Romanovs. However, as a movie, its really brilliant. Its utterly mesmerizing, and it really is all thanks to Alan Rickman. He is utter perfection in this. His portrayal of the infamous Rasputin is genius and almost creepy. The likeness is undeniable. This is a dramatic film and I really wish a proper dvd would finally come out.

VHS : Close My Eyes
Very compelling if not entirely convincing. One thread running through this film is a metaphorical mumble on the classical versus the modern, but I think the three main characters are sketched a little too lightly to support the director's weighty intentions. The result plays rather like two different movies running simultaneously. But this work is definitely worth a couple of hours of your time. Saskia Reeves is just dazzling as the bossy sister who's as much prey to her own impulses as is her weak younger brother. Pay very close attention to the opening few seconds in which we see a group of old people (the classical) and a group of punk rockers (the modern), with a bossy little girl connecting the two groups. The whole movie is summarized in this one short scene. Director Poliakoff does have a ... Read More

VHS : Truly Madly Deeply
There aren't enough words in the dictionary to adequately describe Alan Rickman. He is a true gem and a ridiculously underatted actor. It is such a shame for there is no one that can compare to him.

Truly, Madly, Deeply is, for some reason, labeled as a comedy. While there are cute, funny moments- 99% of which occur when Alan Rickman is onscreen-this is, without a doubt, a heartbreaking romantic drama. It leaves you feeling achy and depressed throughout the whole film and you can't but help feeling for Juliet Stevenson's character. You can feel her despair, her justified anger at being left so alone, so suddenly. Really, really great acting there.

And then Alan enters like a ray of beautiful sunshine, and you feel that everything will be alright. For how can it not be? It's ... Read More

I love this movie. I owned it on VHS and was looking to upgrade, so I bought this DVD. It's a 2 sided disc so you have to turn the disc over half way through the movie just to watch the rest. Lame. I was also a bit disappointed that the video by Bryan Adams wasn't at the end with the credits like it was on the VHS. It was also at the end of the movie in the movie theatre too, so I'm not sure why they would exclude it on the DVD. I love this movie and hate to give it any thing less than a 4, but because of the DVD format, I'm giving it a 2.

VHS : Quigley Down Under
If you are a Tom Selleck fan you can't go wrong with this Western classic. Tom portrays Matthew Quigley, a dignified gunslinger who has grown weary of his sharpshooter reputation. While the plot is fairly simple it is rewarding to see Quigley do the right thing without a second thought. Such a charismatic role for Selleck. A good film for the entire family, as long as the kids are over 9 or 10.

There's a dialect coach listed in the credits, and her license should be yanked. And burned. Those accents are the worst I've ever heard in any number of crappy movies set in New Orleans. To be fair, maybe the plot was worthwhile, or maybe the performances got better as things developed. But we couldn't listen to it for more than 10 minutes.

I must start this review stating my biased approach. I love this time era and this story so of course I would like it. Here is what I will add that some people might find useful in deciding whether or not to purchase this.

The story is believable and the characters are honest. You see the imperfections of the system as well as the optimism that kept them going. The sisters loose their father and are left with an emotional mother who is beside herself for the outcome of their situation and all that threatens her daughters - no dowry, no status, no husband to look after them, no future or hope. One sister goes the rational way and the other gets lost in romantic ideals. Both have faults and it is through those wounds that they are bound together and become a family.

This film has a real power to it, and presents a major historical figure in a way that is easy to appreciate. The acting and directing is superb and the film is very engrossing, and in some places extremely sad. I'd strongly recommend this.

Vivian Thomas was an amazing man without whom "blue baby" surgery, the first surgery on the human heart, might never have happened. Because he was an African American in a more racist times, he is little known and received credit all too late. He should be an inspiration to young people be they African American or not.

This is also just a very well told story and a pleasure to watch.
