VHS : Annie (1999)
I almost cannot imagine a better-cast "Annie" than this one, unless they could somehow get a time machine and bring young Andrea McArdle herself forward to reclaim the title role. Kathy Bates! Alan Cumming! Audra McDonald! Victor Garber as Daddy Warbucks -- maybe the best of all. The musical is regrettably simplified and shortened for its TV running time, but remains extremely enjoyable and, despite budget and set limitations, far livelier than the overwrought 1982 film. The songs are beautifully sung, and the production numbers are no less delightful for their simplicity. I wish that they could have filmed the full musical, as plotted, with exactly this cast; the result would absolutely have been the definitive "Annie." As it is, I think we are still waiting on the definitive version ... Read More

VHS : Mickey's Once Upon a Christmas (Walt Disney Gold Classic Collection)
The joys and lessons of Christmases past are revisited in three enchanting, lesson-filled tales featuring Disney's favorite cartoon characters - in the first story, Donald's nephews, Huey, Dewey and Louie remember the time they wished Christmas was every day and it came true! As they relive Christmas day over and over again, the fun soon turns monotonous and boring, and along the way, the boys learn the true meaning of Christmas.

In the second story, Goofy and his son Max confront the 'myth' of Santa Claus - Goofy is a true believer and Max turns out to be skeptic after next door neighbor Pete tells him Santa isn't real. It takes a lot of effort and some magic before Max comes around:)

In the last story, Mickey and Minnie play down-on-their luck sweethearts whose purse strings ... Read More

VHS : Spice World
First off I'm quite amazed, it seems EVERY other review on here is about the movie!! Well this is not the VHS, DVD or blu-ray, you have clicked on the CD version of Spiceworld, aka the very bearable soundtrack to the movie.

This album is great. Listening to it makes me realise what a lost society we live in now, where barely an original tune is released anymore. Spiceworld takes me back to not only my early teen years, but back to when music was great. The melodies are superb and catchy, and the lyrics mean something worthwile. Now for my song reviews:

1. Spice Up Your Life - 3/5. My least favourite track on the album, the one time I felt the girls had been pressured into a particular type of song to appeal for the first single. It's not bad, but it's not up to the ... Read More

VHS : Scooby-Doo and the Reluctant Werewolf
I know a lot of people don't like the departure from the regular Scooby Doo formula. But if we are willing to accept that this is different, but still great, it offers different types of hilarious Halloween comedy. The story starts normal and cheerful enough as Shaggy wins a race. The story then changes to Dracula's castle. Dracula is upset that the werewolf has retired before the monster road race, which means he will have to cancel the race. Suddenly, he realizes that there is a way to get a new werewolf. (He realizes he may be able to turn race car driver Shaggy into a werewolf.) So, he sends the interesting hunch bunch to perform this task. (One of them slobbers and can only say the most simple of words, while the other sounds like he is an English Major and a Shakespearean Actor. Interesting paradox!)

Probably my favorite ALL TIME movie. I watch it not just for the story but also for the subtle facial expressions at certain moments...ohhh when Jonas decided he just found his lead actress in Rina, smirking as she was distributing the sandwiches to the out of work crew...his expression...Pappard is the epitome of cool...The whole film is Americana sine qua non just as American Grafitti is...The one liners are pricesless...Miss Baker is beyond perfect...LOVED IT! ALWAYS WILL!

So Bond may be a "dinosaur" but he took a slight evolutionary step forward with Pierce Brosnan who at the time seemed born to play Bond. So it was the 90s, the coldwar had thawed out, so-called political correctness was in the air and so what's a "sexist", coldwar warrior, relic of the 1960s to do? Well, pretty much what he's always done. Because really the world hadn't changed so much that women don't no longer go for cocky, smooth talking alpha-males (no matter how p.c. things get) and governments don't use remorseless assassins to spy and kill for them. Heh, Bond's new boss, a woman (it's the 90s see) by the name of "M", calls Bond a dinosaur but she sure does need him and he's still popular with movie goers. Somethings don't change I guess and sometimes that's a good thing... A James Bond that doesn't know how to have a good time ... Read More
