Well, it must be a good movie, since I never forgot what I have seen when I was 11. This movie was one of the first we got to watch in Bavaria, after the war. I am a little older now, but would like to see it again, mayby in the original, why not? Johannes.

VHS : Tortilla Flat
Time has not been kind to "Tortilla Flat" (1942). Spencer Tracy, John Garfield and Hedy Lamarr are regrettably miscast in this disappointing adaptation of John Steinbeck's 1935 novel. However, Frank Morgan earned an Oscar nomination for his standout performance as the dog-loving hermit - the best aspect of director Victor Fleming's misguided comedy-drama. The Steinbeck realism is hopelessly lost amid the MGM gloss.

VHS : Lord Jim
Joseph Conrad's novel is a classic and Richard Brooks made a first-rate film version, with a great cast headed by Peter O'Toole in the early years of his career. Filmed in Super Panavasion 70 on locations in South East Asia, the film looks breathtaking in this excellent DVD transfer that has been remastered in high definition. Jack Hawkins narrates as well as appears (sadly, after he had had operations for throat cancer so his rich voice has lost some of its magic) and just when you think the story is reaching a conclusion, James Mason turns up for another chapter. Bronislau Kaper's music score is one of the greats (also including lots of Asian gamelan instruments) and decades ago was a collector's item LP. This anamorphic transfer recreates the visual impact of the film's initial theatrical release and the Dolby Digital ... Read More

VHS : Spawn of the North (B&W)
SPAWN OF THE NORTH is one of the most underrated films from the late 1930's although at the time it was a big hit and won Academy Awards for it's excellent special effects (so impressive they were lifted in put in later films). The movie stars Henry Fonda, Dorothy Lamour, George Raft, and John Barrymore and is set in Alaska. Dorothy Lamour has one of the best dramatic roles of her career as the cannery girl torn between Raft and Fonda and Barrymore is excellent in one of his best "character" parts as a drunken newspaperman but the emphasis is on action. The fairly recent movie THE PERFECT STORM seems to have been a little inspired by this classic. This movie is a must for those who love big-budget "big" movies with top production values.

6.Touch of Evil starring: Joe Basulto, Joseph Calleia, Ray Collins, Marlene Dietrich, Zsa Zsa Gabor

VHS : Touch of Evil
A big "Citizen Kane" fan in my youth, I saw Touch of Evil in 1981 and thought it was simply awful. Then recently I heard of this reissue, and thought I'd buy it and watch it again. I discovered that in our youth we often know what's right, but often doubt ourselves. The movie is still awful. It may be more true to Welle's vision, but it's still awful. His talent had gone, quite obviously, by this time.

Many of us want so desperately to find Welles' later work important that we'll do almost anything to trick ourselves into thinking it is. Most often men do this... women know it may quack like a duck but it ain't no duck. This movie is hard to watch, not credible, the writing is unnatural and stilted, the premise preposterous.

Yes, the opening crane shot is elaborate and done in one take. But a bit unnecessary. ... Read More

VHS : His Butler's Sister (B&W)
One of Deanna Durbin's best movies of the period, HIS BUTLER'S SISTER (1943) features the adorable songbird in a comedic story of mixed identities and showbusiness dreams. Co-starring with Franchot Tone, one of her most formidable and appealing leading men, Deanna shines brightly here!

Stagestruck teen Ann Carter (Deanna Durbin) gets off the train in New York city, and goes to stay with her rich older brother (Pat O'Brien) in his ritzy mansion. Unbeknownst to Ann, he's actually the butler of young Broadway composer Charles Gerard (Franchot Tone). Desperate to appear on the stage one way or another, Ann plays along with her brother and becomes the new maid, in a bid to kick-start her showbiz career. All manner of hilarious comic hijinks and mixed identities ensue before Ann's musical dreams are realised...and Charles falls head ... Read More

VHS : Anthony Adverse
whenever i watch 'anthony adverse' on television, i wonder why warner brothers sought to film it.

for the many things that are huge advantages in this film, it boasts equally large disavantages.

for its list of advantages, one has to start with olivia de havilland. her part is woefully small, yet knowing it would be a prestige picture (?), bette davis supposedly wanted it. but davis was greedy. if jack warner had bought the rights to 'the hairy ape' she would have wanted the lead in that. no matter--de havilland is gorgeous and dewy. she is everything the role needs. she is matched by anita louise as the tragic maria, mother of the title character who dies in childbirth. and they have male beauty counterparts in louis hayward and donald woods.

for out and out acting, the film has claude rains and gale sondergaard ... Read More

VHS : The Story of Louis Pasteur
Paul Muni, who had a propensity for being cast in roles of historical figures scored big in his Oscar winning portrayal in the title role of "The Story of Louis Pasteur". His acting style, honed by years in the Yiddish theatre was perfect for these grandiose parts.

Pasteur, a French chemist in the 1860's is ridiclued and scorned by the French Academy of Medicine for his theories postulating the microbial origins of infectious disease. With the rates of death during chilbirth soaring, Pasteur feels compelled to determine why. Although presenting convincing evidence that lack of sterilization is to blame, he is cast out from Paris at the insistence of Emperor Louis Napolean.

Pasteur settles in Abois where he perfects a vaccine for the prevention of an anthrax epidemic that is decimating the cattle and sheep population of the country. His discovery ... Read More

VHS : Five Graves to Cairo (1943)
This WWII movie is an unexpected delight, although coming from Billy Wilder the unexpected should be expected. The action in Five Graves to Cairo takes place in a flea-bitten, mud-brick hotel on the edge of the North African desert. It's 1942 and Tobruk has fallen. Rommel and the Afrika Corps are driving toward Cairo and the only thing that can stop them is a lack of supplies. The English are worried. The Egyptians are testing the wind. And Rommel seems to be supremely confident. "We shall take that big cigar from Churchill's mouth and make him say 'Heil'!" he says with a smirk. He has reason to be confident. "It's not the supplies which reach us," he says. "It's us who reach the supplies...thousands and thousands of gallons of petrol..." and water, ammunition and food. The only things that can stop him is a British tank corporal, John Bramble (Franchot Tone), the fearful Egyptian ... Read More
