In an attempt to repeat the magic and financial success they had with `The Mighty Ducks' (92) two years previously, Disney turned their attention to major league baseball and the hometown Angels. Deciding to do a remake of the '51 film `Angels in the Outfield' which starred Paul Douglas they had all they needed available right from the beginning; a tried and true storyline to work from and access to a local, professional baseball team. What could make things more perfect? Well how about the fact that the team in question just happened to be named the Angels fitting perfectly into the title and theme of the proposed film! Ahh..., the genius of the Disney machine is a beautiful thing to observe isn't it?

The end result of their endeavors, `Angels in the Outfield' is definitely a ... Read More

Ok, Jack Kerouac's writings may not be the easiest to follow, but this film is worse. What IS going on here? Beats me. The film-maker was more interested in stylization than story-telling. I gave up after about 30 mins, which is 25 more than a movie deserves if it gets off to a thud like this one.

VHS : Summer of Sam
Spike Lee retreads the same old thing - a film with stereotypical Black and Italian-American "types" in "Summer of Sam" as he often does in most of his work (if you can call it that) and that's all you get from this film.

The film sports an all star cast, but aside from Adrian Brody's role, the film falls flat. Lee just is not using his cast as anything more than window dressing for a bad script.

Indeed one feels the paranoia of that summer, however it's way overdone. It would be great from a high school musical but this is supposed to be a feature film. Subtlety is not Mr. Lee's strong suit and it's worn quite thin in this wanna be nostalgia trip. Remove the cursing and you have no sound except for a good sound track - great music. The camera shots are everywhere and no where. ... Read More

I don't often watch contemporary films because I find most of them to reek of crummy Hollywood fluff -- this one is different, MUCH better! I'm stingy with awarding stars for films too but this one really deserves all the accolades that I can pile on.

It's simply the story of a European Jewish guy who just wants to be a pianist. He clearly has the playing skills of Chopin and he's totally focused upon his art until WW II intervenes... thus, the viewer can anticipate his forthcoming experience(s).

This film is a bit of a sleeper -- at least I've never heard folks talking about it much... certainly not to the level it deserves. It's really incredibly well-conceived, punctuated with terrific acting and brilliant cinematography. I was totally drawn in to this one. If you have a big-screen television, ... Read More

The region 1 DVD version has no additional extras to the VHS one described. Good to see an earlier effort of Antonio's though. The plot does drag on slightly and having the same family move house twice within six months seems a bit far fetched. The only reason I was saw this movie for a second time was that it was due for UK transmission by BBC on Monday 24 March, then was postponed to Friday 4 April due to Iraq news. This transmission has also been postponed giving no further air date. Save your money and look out for the show on BBC1 listings in UK. Around 23.30 to 01.00 has been the previous attempted start times.

It was a pretty fair family movie - some of it was similar to the 80's Harrison Ford movie, "Witness" - The early scenes on the farm (Time for milking) was a direct quote from Witness - even the 430 am getting up time. Anyway, the movie was only 59 minutes long and could have used some better actors, too.

Malik's epic anti-war treatise is less effective on repeat and its pitch at the sublime is best savoured on big-screen theatre darkness to work its magic. Much of the necessary swatches of sky through tree canopy, macro nature, and shifting light over sussurating grasses, the ephphanies experienced from the Christ-like Caviezel used to counter the violence of combat terror, is lost on small format. Initially, the film moved me. Now, and with the pretentious,'New World', added to Malik's oeuvre, I side with those who experience tedium, while holding that it is an incomparably better film. The lack of character development is essential to the director's overview; their parts clearly serve the director's philosophy. Yet there are stunning cameo roles from Nolte, Penn, and Cavizel. It is one of the few war films that delve into the ... Read More

Bullet is Mickey Rourke's show, he owns it. Plus there's also a high quality ensemble cast comprising the impressive line-up of the late Tupac Shakur, Adrien Brody and Ted Levine. The storyline involves Butch Stein(Rourke) being released from prison after serving time for taking the rap for a crime he did not commit. Uppermost in his mind upon his release are two things:getting loaded on smack and getting his own back on his arch enemy Tank(Shakur). The Stein family is comically dysfunctional and the hysterical reunion dinner dialogue involving the convict Butch Stein(Rourke), the schizophrenic psychotic "GI Joe" Lewis Stein(Levine) and the "Salvador Dali" Ruby Stein (Brody) with them all being thirty something, still living at home, being terrorised by their alcoholic ball- breaking overworked father and nannied by their yenter jewish ...
